SR60-Mod - Page 225

Well I haven't been using my Grados much recently so my comparison may be a little off but they seem to be shifted back toward the more treble focused sound with a little less bass. It doesn't sound like stock though, and it doesn't sound like the typical modded ones do.

i see that here are a lot of greado fans... i have been havin wierd feelings about getting a pair of grados... now... my question is simple.... what is the best from sr60i sr80i sr125i and sr225i?....

all of them are overpriced by a high rate, here in europe.... so i just want to know which one of these has the best music enjoying sound... i do want bass as much as possible, highs to be crisp and vocals be clear.... i listen to music that has lots of instruments, and is very complex... i need the best of the best... and i am posting this here, because i am going to make the mod that has been posted in the beggining of the thread to any i will get....

thank you in advance for helping me...

Mine sounded more like closed cans on the low end but still had the air in the higher areas. Obviously the thickness of the material plays a huge roll. If a bunch of us tried it and started eliminating what didn't sound good and tried a bunch of stuff I bet we'd find a big time HIT. Mine had the foam right behind the Bila screen he put in my shells and I just remember thinking when I did it-"there are definite possibilities here, we just have to find the right material".  When I was in the hospital in February for that month I had the foam in the whole time and every doctor, nurse, physical therapist that heard them (it got around and they would show up at my door, can I hear the headphones everyone is talking about) thought they were the best sounding cans they had ever heard. You could see their faces change to "OMG" its was cool.....when I went to limba I took it out, time to put it back....oh dam, sorry for the long rant....

Welcome--I think you'll find that if your going to mod them you can quickly make an entry level model sound like one pretty far up the ladder. So I would buy what your comfortable spending knowing that whatever model you get

will probably sound better then what you started with after  4 or 5 easy mods. Somebody correct me if you feel I'm wrong I don't want this guy to buy something solely on my thoughts about the choice.

The treble is easy to tame or whatever you want to do, its getting the bass up to where you might want it that will be the tricky part....enjoy whichever way you go, they all sound pretty damn good!!!

about that, can anyone direct me to a mod for the bass... to make it better?... anything that do not implies me opening the headphones from that glued part?..... i kept searching for some time now, and i am not really succesfull...

i do was thinking if anyone knows which from grado lower series, about to sr225i maximum, which one is the best sounding?... i have been looking into either  sr80i sr60i or sr225i... i never heard any review on sr 125i that to say that they do really excel in anything.... in here, the price is about +50% of america prices, so my choice must be the best from the start...

right now i am asking myself if i should get sr60i or sr80i... because i heard that sr225i has too much treble compared to bass....

in my opinion. If i was going to buy a pair to mod, I would go for the cheapest 60i or 80i I could find. OR the 225i if i had the cash. Supposedly the 225i drivers are matched to the same extent that all the drivers up the rest of the line are. In theory if you put 225i drivers in any of the enclosures further up the line it should sound real similar to what they do.. That is just what I've heard. Actually, in all honesty if money wasn't an issue I would probably buy a 325i and get some wooden inners, because I think aluminium would appeal the most to my likings. So, it all depends on what you want to do.

Have you heard of Allesandro Skerry?

Pretty much a Grado by another name. The MS1 is supposedly the same as an SR80 or an SR125, seems to be a lot of debate as to which. The MS2 is similar to the 325 and the MS Pro is a variation of the RS1.

You can always get something off the for sale forums too. Not sure how much shipping or customs figure into the cost equation. As far as which Grado is best is a subjective thing to, but the SR60 is a great headphone for the money, similarly so is the MS1. The whole idea of this thread was to take an SR60 and scale it up to a higher end Grado. If your still in the market in a week or two PM I might have one for sale.

As for the MS1 i love it way more than my Grado SR80i, more analytical, less bassy, more mid forwarded and more clear. i like th esound as much as my HD25 (199$) so that would be a lot to say.

BTW if I could make my grado mod sound like the MS1 i'd be happy

If you keep these like this, you know you gotta go brown suede on the headband...

If you live in Europe buy Alessandro http://www.alessandro-products.com/main.php?p=headphones

I cut a piece of belt from American Eagle to make the cover.

I guess we could refer to these as the "Woody Harrelson" edition of Grados.  gs1000.gif

I have shortened my monstrous carbon cups and added a third layer of fiber, they sound much better now than frankenstainous type. The shorter the cup the more relaxed mids get. To be honest when I compared carbon vs plasitc cups I tried them with no cups at all and the sound was quite fine, very open mids and highs and some lower bass was lacking. With longer tube cups sound sometimes seems like it's coming from somewhere in the cup behind the driver rather than from the driver itself.

With the carbon cups now being just lightly longer than stock ones I can report much more bass both in quantity and definition, they are quite potent down to even 20Hz. Apart from that sound signature hasn't changed much, there is less sharpness and shrillness in highs, lower mids are well filled. Definetly increased detail completes the description of carbon fiber cups.

I'll post some pictures when (if) I apply some cosmetics like laquer etc.

On a side note, it takes whole 5 minutes to make such cups, even a child could do it easly.

Hi Guys great thread .

I'm sure this has been asked though my wi-fi is playing up slightly so browsing is laborious .

I own the iGrado's and  found the cutting hole in ear pads mod to greatly improve the treble .

I'm presuming most if not all these mods, punching holes for improved air flow and attaching velvet etc, that apply to the sr60 are relevant for the sr60i and also the Igrado's ?

Would anyone compare a modded up sr60i to a out of the box senn HD650?

I.E - Could I mod up some sr60i's and get a overall audiophile quality of sound that could measure up to the popular HD650? .

Or and what model of "out of the box" grado's do people believe a fully modded sr60i's is comparable too?.

Thanks and apologies as I'm sure these questions would of been discussed elsewhere .
