Are those wireless?

I posted a page or so back that I made the cables detachable. I also used new cable Canare Quad Star 20awg.

Interesting, how do they sound?

I'm using jumbo's and was looking for something that was a compromise sound wise between the bowls and the jumbo's. Perhaps you've hit on it but I was sort of looking for a cleaner look. Sort of reminds me of the Clampett truck in the Beverl Hillbillies, just sayin.

I honestly couldn't tell you I've only used comfies. Wider soundstage and the base is still there, but I think mine have a lot more bass than most people describe grados to have.

What you're doing is not unlike what the HD800 does with its semi-transparent metal mesh.  You're trying to capture bass without creating standing waves.  To do that, you need something that's not as porous as foam but not as airtight as nagahyde.  A number of non-Grado brands use large rings covered in velour, which is comfortable and helpful but maybe still a little too porous for the job.  Leather is great, because it breathes (unless you're using patent leather).  This material looks like it would be less porous than velour-covered foam but more transparent than the artificial stuff like nagahyde.  While what you've created is not the most attractive piece, neither was John Grado's prototype of the G-Cush jumbo pad.  As too much out there puts form over substance - and cosmetics over sound - I salute you for venturing out into the great wide open.  Well done, sir.  Go with the sound!

This is what I've been waiting for.  If the old .018 was a little thicker than window screen and .063 was chicken wire, .028 aluminum mesh seems to hit the sweet spot for me.  It's a bit of a pain to bend (though still cuttable with scissors).  I like that it's more grill-like (and spaciously open) while still displaying a sense of style.  I also have .035 but I think .028 is what I've been waiting for and I recommend it to all my patients who chew sugarless gum.

Do  count 11 pairs on that box? Nice progress report :)

Danthrax, those are interesting to say the least. Glad you are enjoying the way they sound though. What exactly is that outer material? It almost looks like a cut apart woven belt.

Yeah it's a belt.

I can't imagine that being that comfortable. That being said, I did finally switch back from bowls to quarter modded comfies. The bowls just put too much stress on my glasses and I can't do that hour or so of listening I want to before bed.

I was planning on picking up some Sennheiser pads to try to make some vwap style pads, but thats out now that they are $25 a pair. I wish I knew what happened to the price of them and when they went up from the $8 or so they were until recently. That and I have struck out with finding a Beyer headband pad so far. Apparently no one has one they want to sell. It has been a pretty crappy week for my Grados.

Thanks!  I'm finally getting past some of my OCD.  I never realized a headphone design to give me strage fright.  I feel like I'm turning a corner.  I'm excited about the future.

Your instincts are dead on.  Don't worry about what it looks like.  Go with the sound.  If it sounds right, there are always ways to make it more attractive.

I've got a bunch of black leather coming.  I want to make leather pads and headbands.

Thanks!  It's cocobolo, the finest tonewood in the world - apart from Brazilian rosewood.  I've got BR but it's a pain to cut and I'm taken with the figuring of the cocobolo.  I just love this wood - and the sound is amazing.  Where mahogany is a great all-rounder, cocobolo really brings out the bass, which is perfect for Grados, which have unfiltered treble and fantastic mids.  The cocobolo lets the bass come out to play - and leaving it all in an open design lets the mids and treble remain open.  With the other mods (because it's not just the cocobolo by itself), the cocobolo makes Grados sound like they're amped.  Even with the stock Grado cabling, the bass is low and impactful.  I'm pretty happy about the result.
