Good luck!

If Headroom did not recommend the Micro Amp for the AKG K701's, they must be insane, or atleast whoever there who told you that was!

The Headroom Micro Amp can drive the K701's to EARSPLITTING LEVELS on high gain, levels that you or noone else could possibly tolerate. The headphones break-up way before the Micro Amp clips.

The Micro Amp has exactly the same power output as their Desk Top Amp, and Desk Top Ultra.

When I had the 701's, it could easily drive these headphones with authority and power, and had they excellent bass and dynamics when driven by the Micro Amp.

Just my 2 cents.

I had no problems driving the AKG K-701/2 with the Headroom Micro Amp. I know another Head-Fi'er that uses it with the 300ohm HD800 and I think he also uses his 600ohm T1 with it. I've also used the Senn HD650 that sounded nice.

I'm not trying to convince you. I'm just saying that the Micro Amp has the juice.

M^3 or Dynalo/Gilmore lite

The best amp I used when I owned the 701 was the Matrix M Stage. It brought the 701 to another level. It had the power and bass plus detail to drive them without much effort. For the money I do not think you will find better however mine was the first Matrix not sure about V2 have not heard it.

I've been running mine on a Rockhopper M^3 for about three years and love it. However I will admit I have been looking at some of the HeadRoom amps lately.

OOPSIE- I misquoted Headroom.  They told me that they didn't recommend 'PORTABLE' amps to drive the AKGs.  I forgot I asked them about the portable Headroom amps and they didn't recommend any of their portable amps.

My bad and apologies for the confusion.

So I'm looking at the sparrow anyone have any exprience with the K701 and this amp??

I have just got some K702s and plugged them into the Sparrow version A (8741) and they sound suprisingly good. Both the k702s and the Sparrow version A are yet to run in but sound very promising. Great speed and detail and nice bass impact.

I will let you know how the combination comes along.

The HD800s were very definately not to my liking on the Sparrow (Lacked drive).

Good luck on your quest
