Just an FYI, I contacted Headroom and they don't recommend the Micro Amp with the AKGs - these 'cans need a lot of juice to power. Just goes to show that Headroom is a class act as they were being honest and didn't just want a quick sale. Personally, I would recommend a good used Headroom Home Amp for around $300-400. FWIW, Stereophile has recommended the Musical Fidelity X-CAN V8 to power these AKGs.
Good luck!

If Headroom did not recommend the Micro Amp for the AKG K701's, they must be insane, or atleast whoever there who told you that was!
The Headroom Micro Amp can drive the K701's to EARSPLITTING LEVELS on high gain, levels that you or noone else could possibly tolerate. The headphones break-up way before the Micro Amp clips.
The Micro Amp has exactly the same power output as their Desk Top Amp, and Desk Top Ultra.
When I had the 701's, it could easily drive these headphones with authority and power, and had they excellent bass and dynamics when driven by the Micro Amp.
Just my 2 cents.
