Le Morte Celestion??

I happened to drop by Best Buy, a mass market electronics chain store, in Washington DC today. Lo and behold, they were selling Celestion speakers as part of a home theater speakers system!
I was quite surprised and somewhat disappointed.

For those who don't know of Celestion, its a British loudspeaker brand that manufactures High end speakers (or used to). Back in the late 80s and early 90s, the Celestion made the muchl-acclaimed SL 600 and SL 6si hi-fi loudspeakers. The SL 600, if I remember correctly sold for around $3000. This was followed by the 100, 300, Kingston and the A series; all great speakers in their own right. I suspect British folks in our forum would agree.

But now... the company's latest flagship Style series is on sale at Best Buy at $399 a pair, flanked by mass market speakers from JVC, Sony, Bose and the occasional entry level JBL!!

I apologize for ranting on this issue, but I was converted into "hi-fi" by Celestion speakers. Still remember the day I first heard the Celestion 3 almost 10 years ago. One word: magic.

What's going on?? Is this the end of yet another fine British loudspeaker pedigree ?

I know how you feel...my first great speakers were a/d/s studio monitors from the mid 80s. They were awesome. Now a/d/s only deals in car audio...If it makes you feel any better, the company is probably doing better than ever if they have gone down the commercial route...I know I would probably have a fit if Conrad-Johnson left hifi to make low end compact systems, but companies change I guess.

I used to own a pair of A/D/S back in the early 90s. I can't remember the model, but they costed around $500. They were excellent speakers, but not as bright sounding as the celestions.

And there was a carver amp, and a nakamichi cassette deck that I owned. And those companies are either gone or strayed from the "path." pity.....
