I've been using a tube DAC with a tube amp and it's not too bad but with the 701. I'd think a transparent source with a tube amp and the 650s would be pretty nice. You want your source to be as real as possible. You color your sound with your tube selection and headphones.

The combo of a tube dac with a tube amp can sound really good if implemented correctly. Just make sure they both dont have a tubey sound signature.

I haven't heard any Audio-gd dacs but from what I've read, they are very good. If you want more body and dynamics, you could try a different power cord/interconnects. Also, have you tried tube rolling that earmax? I would also suggest keeping the ref.5 for future flexibility. But If you definitely want a different flavor, I can suggest looking at these:

 

Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista 21

Monarchy Audio M24 or NM24
