New ESS Sabre32 (ES9018) based DAC from Audio-gd....the NFB-1

The NFB-1 is currently in the testing phase and is based upon the RE5 circuit (in so far as the RE5 base circuit can be used) and packaged in the mid size ROC/RE5 chassis box. Looks like this DAC should be a real high quality contender in the sub 1.25K range. I'm guessing about the price range ( maybe 900-1.2K ?) hopefully it'll come in under 1K vs the pcm1704 equipped RE5.

I wonder how this will compare to TPA's Buffalo implementation of the 9018.

Kingwa has already said (and I posted it) that it will be cheaper than the PCM1704 Ref5.

As soon as it is available I am buying one.

Get out! :P I seriously don't want to buy another DAC and at the same time I want to have that DAC. Does that make any sense?

I had a thread started already Peete!

What I want to know is how many DACs per channel is it going to use?

Same here, I have enough DAC's as it is, and have owned more than enough...probably 10 different brands over the past 2 years [Lavry, Apogee, Havana, etc].

BUT, I WANT THIS DAC!!!!!

It has 8 internal DACs IIRC which means 4 per channel in differential mode (?)

If this is cheaper than the RE5 it's a good deal as long as the SQ is up to snuff.

The preorder is up, it's $850 and begins shipping mid september!

I really wish I was richer, but i guess I should be thankful for what I have :P

How hard would it be to implement a passive digital output (passthrough)?

Just pulling your chain, I don't really care. Your title sounds more official anyway.

I wonder what the sound signature is compared to the 1704 without DSP (this does not seem to have the DSP chip)? This must be due to the 1704 chip being out of production.

Also, is the price $850 minus 10% or is $850 the discounted price, which is the same price as the Ref-5 non-DSP.

Im going to wait for comparisons to the original Ref5 DSP1 or DF before buying :P
