Flat Frequency Response Digital Audio Players(s)

I am currently conducing research on a headphone rig I plan on purchasing in the future. So far, I am looking to purchase either DT 48E or DT250 headphones. My goal is to acquire a rig (by rig I mean setup. I am not down with the lingo around here) that has a flat frequency response. Hence, I am looking at the DT 48s. I am also looking into amps (preferably portable) and a possible DAC (again, something else that I am ignorant about in regards to audio). Also, I am looking to purchase a digital audio player that has a flat frequency response (or at least as close to it as possible). I participated in one thread (http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/490558/the-perfect-digital-audio-player/30#post_6867501) about digital audio players and my initial understanding was that the Clip+ can achieve a flat frequency response if I am to Rockbox it. However, someone then wrote that the Clip+ is great for it's price but that the sound quality was not top-notch and that there are better DAPs out there.

I have a few concerns/questions. First being that I don't understand how it is that I would use Rockbox to achieve a flat frequency response. Would this be by using pink noise and sine waves (I believe those are the proper terms and even there I don't quite understand what they are. I am a n00b after all) accompanied with an equalizer? Secondly, is there another avenue that I shall pursue in regards to a flat frequency response rig? Do my fellow head-fiers have information that could assist me in doing so? If you do please offer your information! I have learned a lot since I registered to be a part of this forum and I really enjoy being a part of the head-fi community. Thanks for taking the time to view my thread and thanks in advance for any responses!

If you are using an amplifier in addition to the player, nearly every player will offer a flat frequency response.

When people complain about players without a flat frequency response, it's usually because of bass rolloff. This is caused by the player not having enough current to drive low impedance headphones. If you are feeding your player into an amplifier, the load is very high impedance so you won't have the bass rolloff problem.

Don't worry about pink noise and sine waves. That's just burn-in mumbo jumbo that people use because they think it helps the sound. Just use the player and play the files with the EQ off.

Interesting. Thank you for the responses. Very informative! Would you have any amplifier suggestions in mind?

If you're not using an amp, whether or not a player keep a flat response without a load doesn't help. When you plug headphones (a load) into the player, a lot of players' internal headphone amps aren't good enough to keep the response flat. How this works depends directly on the headphone involved. I won't blame the Clip if it can't keep a flat response when a K1000 or HE-6 is plugged either :p

Yeah, I definitely plan on using an amplifier to drive my headphones. I want the max potential from them. I am looking into portable amplifiers being that I commute a lot.

Well, I looked this thread up now that I am looking for a new DAP.

I currently have the Ultrasone Pro 900, PA2V2 as an amp and had a Clip+ (which as far as I know is ruler flat). I am curious as to how my amplifier will affect the frequency response of the DAP. I like having a flat frequency response so that when I EQ my source of reference is nice and simple. I am very aware of the frequency response of the Pro 900.

Being that I cannot find any information on the frequency response of the PA2V2 should I even worry about the frequency response of my DAP unless it has really nasty spikes?

PS: I am not just worried about bass rolloff.
