Just got koss pro dj100 and it's great!

That's very strange. Maybe burn-in will help, but who knows. I had the HD-650 for quite awhile and always felt they had too much bass for me. Even with neutral amps and different types of cables. Is it possible that the PA2V2 adds a little extra bass? I doubt this is the case unless you can test it with another amp or even a receiver.

I always felt my DJ100 was a step under being bass heavy. Just where I like it. More than the SRH-840, but less than the M50, HD-650 and HFI-680 for sure to my ears.

It's funny because there is actually people out there who say the DJ100 is too bass light and I never understood this

Could be some weird variations between pairs or something.

If any part of it's signature was forward on my pairs, it was the upper mids and then slightly more bass than what would be in a fairly neutral headphone.

I'd be curious if you find anything out or it changes with burn-in.

Strangely I had a K240 Studio that had bloated bass out of the box and was nearly bass heavy. These days after thousands of hours of use, there is no way I could call them anything close to that. So my guess is that the DJ100 needs a few hours of more burn-in. It's possible, but maybe not.

i have read about the PA2V2 being a bit bassy. i'll have to try it with the Fiio E5 i have laying around.

EDIT: sounds pretty much the same when plugged into my headroom amp. high gain, crossfeed on, and brightness filter 2 to compensate for the crossfeed. it sounds a bit tighter with maybe a tad more midrange attack, no major difference. surprisingly it needs about the same position on the volume knob as the HD650's.

does everybody else's DJ100's have a stereo/mono switch on the bottom of the right earcup? ive never seen this mentioned, but mine has it. of course i have it set to stereo.

Mine also has that switch on it. I guess maybe just leave them burning in while you sleep and see if anything changes. Maybe bass heavy pairs really do exist

On the box it says "Extreme Bass Response" and I always found that a bit funny. Still good bass, but not what I'd called "Extreme"!

don't get me wrong, i like them, and i am 99% sure i am keeping them, i was just expecting a little less bass. its not ridiculous or anything, just definitely bassier than my SA6's and my HD650's. its not a bad bass either. it's controlled, tight and punchy, but also gets surprisingly deep for a small sealed headphone. maybe the Fiio L3 will change the sound a tad once i get that. i am using the line out on my iphone, but it is an apple dock with the 3.5mm plug on the back of it. so i am using a cheap super thin 3.5mm male to male cable from the iphone dock to the pa2v2. its one of those cheap thin cables that came with the Fiio E5.

the mid-range and top-end is niiiiccce though. the mid and top end makes it seem like a steal at 80 bucks. they give the HD650's a run for their money in terms of detail as well.

Wish I could use my pair. I think there's a 30% chance I have a defect. I thought that with my second pair, but it somehow "fixed" itself on day 3 of burn-in.
After day two the sound isn't that clear and varies between songs. Some songs sound PERFECT. This is totally unlike the 100% good DJ100.

This time I've been using pink noise and last time I used music, maybe I should have used music instead for burn-in.

Maybe Koss has poor quality control. Who knows. I doubt they do burn-in at the factory.

The pair I got in a few days ago sounded bad out of the box. I was pretty disgusted because I was really looking forward to it

BTW Amazon now sells them from a merchant (fulfilled by Amazon) and they even shipped them with Amazon prime for $3.99 for next day.
Seems strange that for an entire year it's as if they were only available from only two companies online.

Why does the sound quality need to vary between different pairs of the same headphones so much?! Seems it's not just Koss. It's happened to me at least 4 times.
With my HD-650, K601 and K240 Studio as well.

Major product variation.  This model introduced me to the significance of this phenomena in headphones.

Tdock, you third pair sounds like my first pair.  Sounded good at times then turned to utter crap most of the time.

Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking! I wonder how many people get pairs like this. Makes me sick. I especially remember the 2nd pair too that was so bad that it felt defective. Somehow transformed after burn-in which makes no sense. I hope this pair does, but on day two there was not a lot of change. I bought them from "World Wide Stereo" on Amazon so hopefully they don't need to go back.

I plan on ordering some M50 pads for them too. Only Sweetwater seems to have them and they're out of stock. I bet the SRH-940 velour pads might fit! Too bad it's impossible to find them. I found some other round velour pads, but they require speaker fabric behind them. I got them off a Jwin JHV800 that cost me less than $20. Online it shows them with pleather pads, but these had velour.

So..I can't say it enough, if you get a DJ100 and don't like it, burn it in for 3 days and if it still sounds terrible just send it back and get a replacement. I'll post if my pair gets better. I'm hoping this one just needs music for burn in instead of pink noise

I might have found the DJ100 killer. Turns out my old pair of KRK KNS-8400's had some issue perhaps. This pair sounds a lot better than my old one and it has bass!! Best $150 headphone ever. I sure wish I could make it's memory foam pads fit the DJ100.

You see that's the thing.  People claim certainty that headphones don't change or that they all must sound the same or lawsuits would take place.  So change must be occuring in the elasticity of our minds.  Yet both of us have gone through multiple pairs and should at least by now have adjusted to their sound signatures to not notice a difference.  Yet here we are.  Not to go OT into a burn thread but its certainly applicable here w/ these things.

I wish I had tried M50 pads on my DJ100.  Don't know how that slipped under the radar....

This is just plain weird...Today it's day 3 of burn in. I plugged them into my E9 that's downstairs using the large jack. The treble seemed chopped off and the mids seemed like they were coming from a cave.
The upper mids seemed somewhat forward though. The treble seemed just so weird and not natural. Like the driver was broken!

Out of nowhere I tried the small jack and it sounded like 100x better. Lots of treble, forward mids and good bass. No cave like mids at all. I was listening to them for the last hour with no complaints.
Music was now really engaging and just like how the DJ100 should be..so far it seems.

Yesterday I used my Micro Amp and they sounded like garbage. I'll have to check again and mess with the gain settings or try a smaller amp. It could be that they didn't have enough burn-in.

Hopefully they're fixed, but i'll see. I think the burn-in is what did it. The E9 large jack issue was a temporary scare. Wonder why it made the DJ100 sound so bad. Strange.

So far it looks like the DJ100 is back to it's old self. On day 3 just like it's last pair. Hopefully it doesn't transform into garbage when I try my better amp upstairs.

It seems the E9 is quite decent for the DJ100 (as long as you use the right jack!).

Maybe the DJ100 is the pickiest cheap headphone in the world when it comes to amps.

Tdock.  The E9 has an output Z of 43 ohms from the small jack and 10 ohms from the large jack.  In theory it should sound worse on the smaller jack but there is some other synergy going on if that's how you hear the two jacks.

The KOSS Pro4AAT's are a nightmare to amp too

so i figured out why mine were so bassy... and it was my own fault.

i wasn't getting the best seal in certain spots on the earcups so i had built up the pads a bit in certain spots by placing some tissue behind the pad. i got the seal i wanted, but tonight i figured i'd try some foam instead of the rolled up tissue, and the bass bloat went away. it seems as if the tissue i was using to build up the pads was sealing in the bass, making it seem excessive. i still have a good seal, but they are definitely sounding better now. they are definitely their strongest in the mid-range. they seem pretty natural now.

i knew that if i put a ring around the whole inside that it would surely have an effect, but i only built up around maybe 1/3 of each pad. it just wasn't sealing at the lower/back part of the cup so i made it seal. putting a piece of open cell foam there instead seems to have no effect on the sound, but still seals it to my head. im liking the sound a lot now. im excited for my Fiio L3 to come tomorrow now.

Uh yeah.  Earpads are a huge impact on changing a sound signature.  Glad you figured it out.
