Recabled for entry on both earcups it bypasses the one going through the headband. If your into that sort of thing.

IMO, the 701 is superior in most ways to the AD700 if both are unamped, but the 701 suffers with high energy music (rock/metal/etc).
Once you're amping both properly, the 701 destroys the AD700 (to my ears). They do similar things, but the 701 does all of those things better. Well, with the exception of comfort (the bowls around your ears are wonderful. The large leather bumps compressing your scalp are not).
This is exactly what has been in my head from the day I got the K701 and sold my AD700. The K701 is just on another level especially in detail, resolution and refinement. It would be perfect if I could have the K701 sound with AD700 comfort. The K701 is still better than the AD700 when unamped, and the difference is magnified when amped.
