X-Fi Fatal1ty Champion vs Essence ST

My current headphones are Sony MDR-V600 and I don't think I can
upgrade anytime soon. I'd use the card primarily for gaming, with
Blu-rays next, and music last (I don't have any music above 320kbps
VBR). I'd like the surround sound of the X-Fi and its CMSS 3D (along
with the front panel thingy), but I heard the built-in headphone amp
on the Essence is pretty good.

The X-Fi is about $90 cheaper ($110 right now) after rebate than the
Essence right
now, and when the rebate comes, I can buy a small external amp/
DAC for that $90, if it's even worth it at the price and for my
headphones (which again, I probably won't upgrade for a while).

So...which is the better choice?

Between the Essence and the Auzentech (I assume you mean the Hometheater version), which is better?

Also, are either noticeably better/worse in terms of headphone surround sound or gaming than the X-Fi, with my current headphones?

The Auzen has a dedicated headphone amp in it, so I would go that way.

I am basing this on no other info though.

Most new soundcards are coming with headphone amplifiers for better or worse.

If you are considering the HTHD 7.1 it has all that BD disk audio supports through analog also.  You do not need any receiver for this.

If you want a card for gaming and BD audio and want a headamp, this card is the perfect fit for you.
