Will something die if I do this?

Can someone tell me if this will work?

I read a thread about the V-Dac power supply mod where they replaced the wall wart that came with it with this:

Pyramid PS3KX 3-Amp 12-Volt Power Supply

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002JTD2K/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Not sure how I managed it but I ended up buying this instead:

http://www.amazon.com/Pyramid-PS12KX-10-amp-13-8-volt-Supply/dp/B0002JTD1Q/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1282090893&sr=1-5

Pyramid PS12KX 10-amp 13.8-volt Power Supply

The obvious difference to my eyes is that one has ten amps and the other three.  If I try to use the ten amp PSU will I destroy the V-Dac?  Or will it just be extra awesome?

Thanks.

The amplifier will only draw what it draws. If the amplifier draws say 1 amp, all you need is a powersupply that exceeds this number. Even if you had a 100 amp powersupply, the amplifier would still only draw 1 amp. Your powersupply can't have too much amperage. Though you can have too little. Typically electronics will be labeled for a certain input voltage range as well as a minum available current rating.

I'd be more worried about the higher voltage of the second one. Can the amplifier take 13.8 volts safely? It might be able to but I would check to make sure.

Edit: Even though the first one is called a 12v powersupply, the picture clearly says 13.8 as well. Perhaps this is the rated voltage without load, but once under load it's closer to 12v.

Great. I didn't mention the voltage because I saw the same thing you did, that even though one said 12 on the unit it said 13.8.

Thanks for the information.

Also, a regulated DC power supply is better.

The Pyramid is a regulated linear PSU.

Which is a good thing, yes?

Yes, a regulated linear supply is a good thing.

Unless we're talking about the filaments of DHT tubes, and then an argument might break out. :)

Yes, it will maintain its output dc voltage even if the input ac voltage fluctuates. However, there are other factors to consider like response time, noise filtering, etc... That's why some of the expensive amps have a separate power supply unit.
