Help me find some Classical please - Page 2

Is there a particular label that new to classical folk could look for as a reliable source? i know i've given up a few times on classical aftere buying stuff that is terrible quality.

Sorry, there's no easy answer to your question. I mean, what you call "terrible quality" might just be music that isn't to your taste.

As regards labels, well, it's hard to give a rock-solid recommendation, as "one man's meat is another man's poison". Every label has put out good stuff and bad stuff - only a few snobs and weirdos buy everything from only one label. If you want to save money, Naxos have done some great recordings, but some duds as well. Eloquence in Australia have reissued a lot of classic recordings cheap, but getting them imported will p ut the price up. Most of the major labels have issued historical recordings at bargain prices (EMI's supercheap boxsets in particular), but, again, try before you buy.

This is a good comment but it got me thinking about darkness expressed prior to romantic and contemporary music and in fact I suddenly realised there is, from the 16th and early 17th century England the composer who was the most consistently dark of them all. How did I not think of him in my earlier post?

He is of course: John Dowland.

Wikipedia is good on Dowland. He was a performing lutenist and singer as well as a composer.

The titles of his pieces set the mood (its dark!).

"In Darkness do I Dwell" gets  played often when his name is mentioned on the radio. "Flow my tears" is another and you'll see Wikipedia mentions more.

Listening to Dowland, he sets a very high benchmark for current day performers/songwriters. Morrissey and Cohen are brim full of joy compared with Dowland.

Dowland is today believed to have been a clinical depressed man all his life, however from his depressed state he makes many insightful observations underpinned with the question "what is the point of our existence anyway".

Deutsche Grammophon, London and EMI are a few labels that have consitantly wonderful recording quality. Seraphim is a good value-based label. Naxos can be hit or miss, but when you get a hit it's a ridiculously good value.
