How to Tame the Harshness of my Sony D-40 Discman?

Hi!

This is my first post in a long long while! Great place you have here!

I have a 1988 Sony D-40 Discman (not much info on the Internet though) and am currently using a pair or M-Audio IE-10 Earphones.

I'm finding the sound from this combination a little too harsh for me... and I was was wondering was tips would be suggested to help tame the harshness from the player?

I tried to search but I didn't really know what search words to use.

Thanks so much!

Not sure if this helps, but here's a scan of the discman specs from the manual:

Hi,

is the word "harshness" the one for describing the sound of this PCDP?

Alessandro MS-1 user inside, harshness forbidden.

Any other inputs about this Sony welcome, worth its 10€ you guys think?

The D-40 (D-4 in some markets) was released in 1988 and retailed for 39,800 yen. The top of the range model that year was the D-150/D-15 - 49,800 yen. They share the same main componets except for the DAC which in D40 is a sony CXD1161 while the D-150 has a BB PCM60.

I don't own this discman so i can't say how it sounds but it's a piece of history and for 10€ it's a bargain.

If you need more technical info send me a pm with your email and i will send you the service manual of your D-40.

Wow you still use a CD player?  Is there any positives listening to CDs these days?

Not that this is any help, but I vaguely recall reading many moons ago that the harshness of many early cd players was caused by analogue brick wall filters used in the vast majority of older models.  Don't know if this applies to the D-4/D-40, though.
