There may be much better upgrade paths than going ref 5 to this. If you do decide to, be sure to ask audio-gd their opinion on how the two dac's sound different from each other.

I have the Phoenix and (had) the Ref-1 in ACSS mode. Sometimes I would use my Klipsch X10 IEM's to drown out noise. The loudest I could tolerate was about 8/99 steps on the volume- that is single ended from the Phoenix so balanced would be 1 or 2 out of 99 so it would definitely be a problem. FYI.

Kingwa can build it with less gain or maybe a switch I would think.

US$765 is the preorder price according to: http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/dac/NFB-1/NFB1EN.htm
Cheaper than the Ref5.
Wonder how it compared with other ESS-DACs like the Eastern Electric Minimax.
Me? I might wait till Kingwa retires before getting an Audio G-D product. I mean, hewill only replace anything I've bought three months later right? :-)

Yet another DAC
I am still on the lookout for one. This is probably out of my budget, but nonetheless, it should be interesting to see comparisons of this and the Ref 5 DSP.
