Experimental technical jazz death? Atheist, Cynic, Spastic Ink, what else? - Page 2

1) I never called them bad.

2)The band exists solely "to see how much [John Zorn] could come up with given the limitations of the simple sax, guitar, keyboard, bass, drums format".

Sounds more like a science experiment than it is music.

Agreed, you never said they were bad.  'Bad' is what may be inferred by most readers of your post.

So by your own statement, (#2) they do have a point, according to someone else you seem to be quoting to justify a misunderstanding of the music on your part.

May I humbly suggest two things?

1) Get your own opinion; and

2) Unless asked for, keep it to yourself

It is inappropriate behaviour to crap on someone else's recommendations on this forum.  I would never do it to yours.

Btw if it sounds like a science experiment, it must have been concocted by some mad genius.  I love it, albeit in small doses.  Some great music takes a great deal of effort to appreciate and some of JZs is a good example of that.

oh and sorry again to the op for taking this too far. I can't help it

Ok, so how about:

WAYD (Just check them out, they are great!)

Canvas Solaris (Instrumental)

1980 (Meshuggah influenced)

Humanoid (From Augury)

Kalisia (not exactly what you looking for but a mix of everything)

Architects

Fellsilent (Meshuggah influenced)

Protest The Hero (Incredibly talented, might not be seen by some as metal, but they are great)

Nahemah (Spanish band with jazz influence)

And at this moment can't remember any other bands. Will get back to this thread when I get back home.

I quoted one of the members of the band so really, it is my own inference, actually, it is more of a passing comment.

Look, I understand you like them for your own reasons and that's a merit. You're also free to challenge my opinion. But, I'll just drop it. I apologise for not understanding the social norms of the forum. The OP may go ahead and disregard my posts

Btw, I do keep a lot of stuff to myself

Now that I'm back home here are some other bands.

Chimp Spanner

Intronaut

Lye By Mistake (Incredible band)

OHM:

Well, hope some of them are what you were looking for.

Just found something.. For the past few days I've been listening to The Faceless. A friend recommended them and I'm sold already. I'ts a relatively new band, having put out two albums. I think it fits the bill of this topic very well.

Then you'll like Veil Of Maya

Nahemah sounds cool... many of the other bands are more towards metalcore than the more jazzy technical side like Atheist or Spastic Ink though.

And what about WAYD?

They have other very jazzy songs, thought it can be seen as Technical Death metal with some influences.

EDIT:

Oh yeah, forgot about:

  • Exivious
  • Periphery
  • Cloudkicker
  • Animals As Leaders

Those might be of your liking. Also don't remember if they mentioned Textures

Bear in mind it is very tough to find very similar artists to those you first mentioned. WAYD and Exivious and AAL have a lot of direct Jazz influences,  but they are the more experimental type of music being played now. Chimp Spanner and Keith Merrow are other bands you might like.

Glad you liked Nahemah

The new Atheist will be out in a month, looking forward to it and will buy on the day of release no doubt.

Oh my god does this mean... Atheist tour? Holy shit dude cool news, I can't wait.

There will definitely be an Atheist tour. Would bet my life on it. Pizza Time and Unquestionable Presence are quite spectacular

As Bullseye suggested, I would definitely check out "Animals as Leaders". Very technical, and no vocals to get in the way, just amazing jazz-influenced metal.  I saw them live on the Summer Slaughter Tour.
