Ok, so what's next?

Wallets not going to like this but I'm looking to expand my noobie set up. Currently got a set of Alessandro MS1000i's and a Maverick Audio D1. I'm looking to expand to improve the sound and I'm thinking is a tube amp the next step in the quest for audio perfection? If so can anyone recommend me a good "starter" tube amp that would add to my set up?

LOL.  Newbie is very subjective.  You have 8 posts and are already moving up.  What do you think you are missing in your setup?  What is it lacking?  What music do you listen to.  What is your budget?

I listen to mainly electronic music eg: Air, Daft Punk, Groove Armada, Moby, Green Velvet, UNKLE, Massive Attack, Ian Brown. Also listen to a lot of classics eg: Stones, Faces, The Who, The Doors, The Beatles, Stone Roses, The Smiths, New Order, Niel Young. I don't know what I'm missing, I've been an amp and speakers man for years but recently turned to headphones as the crossover on my right speaker went. I have become completely mesmerised by the whole head-fi vibe and want to see how much a difference each component makes to my music. Budget wise. I'd be prepared to pay about £150/$300 for a tube amp, new or used!

I'm assuming this Maverick is a DAC w/ built-in headamp?  And you are looking for a standalone amp?  Your phones are MS1s customized?

Yeah, the maverick audio d1 is a combined dac/pre-amp/headphone amp. Got my PC going through it then out to my speaker amp. Noticed a big difference already through the speakers. My cans are Alessandro MS1i's that I'm modding into MS1000's. I realise I'm about to embark on a whole new audio adventure but want to make sure I have the correct sequence of components before I start sampling other cans!

Sounds good.  If you like the phones, stick with them.  If you are looking for a starter tube amp for them, that's easy- LDI+...Drives low impedance cans great and three families of tubes.

Also, I'm assuming if you're pumping your music through speakers, it is in lossless format.  That will be the first step of any chain.

That's exactly the answer I was looking for mate, was sweating that you may come back with several suggestions that would confuse me anymore. I'm off now to look into one of these. Thanks again for the point in the right direction!

I was just trying to sort it all out.

Here you go http://cgi.ebay.com/Little-Dot-I-Hybrid-Tube-Transistor-Amp-Amplifier-/200507166775?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0

I have two of these bad boys with different tubes and op-amps and for the price with low impedance cans, it's hard to beat...

Enjoy...
