$400 amp for Sennheiser HD 800? - Page 2

The Schiit Valhalla might be worth waiting for as it's due out in a couple of weeks.  It's a tube amp.

I'm curious about this one! Good price and a lot of hype. I'll probably wait for when someone reviews it after it comes out.

Bottlehead Crack w/ Speedball

The cheapest amp I've liked with the HD-800s was the Elekit TU882R kit amp.  If I had decided to keep the HD-800s, then the Bottlehead Crack would be on my list.  Tubes + DIY = win indeed.

I like the HD800's with the Musical Fidelity X-CAN V3  which you can find used under $400.  The X-Can is a hybrid design, and can easily be up-modded  by changing caps and diodes on the PCB.  The mods are documented on the Internet.  It's very musical on the HD800's I think.

I like the Beta 22 for the HD800's, but that costs more.

The Bottlehead Crack (with the Speedball upgrade) is a nice all-tube design and can be had right around $400 I think.  It sounds nice on the HD800's  but I think the hybrid X-Can V3 does a somewhat better job with the HD800's.  There's a better "grip" on the low end with the X-Can.

Ah, the X-Can. Been searching for it seems like almost a year! Well, looks like I have Head-fi now. I really didn't know if this would work well with the HD-800's, but now that I know, I owe a big thanks to you :) I'll be putting it on my list. As for DIY stuff, it's hard to find pre-built amps, but I'll keep them in mind.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions :)
