As far as NOS tube prices go, I think that it's a combination of honest supply and demand, and some shrewd hoarding strategies.

You were smart! The NOS tube thing is just supply and demand. There aren't many left and the guitar people have a terrible habit of overdriving tubes into an early death.
I don't buy into the NOS thing, either. I've got a few, but I only buy or build projects with tubes that are in production. I don't mind using reproductions.

Thanks for your comments on the tubes! One Great example we saw here in Dayton in the late 90s, was a surplus supply store who bought and stocked EVERYTHING! (I won't name names)They had a whole rm full of tubes new and used, or NOS, you had to hunt or"Cherry Pick"for hrs but we always walked away with smiles on our faces and are treasures in a tube bag....One year they were all gone!!!! I'm talking every tube, even non-audio tubes/TV type tubes, I'll give you one guess who bought the whole room.....Yep, Guys or a guy from the FAR EAST....They had them put in boxes after boxes and then placed on skids for shipment abroad....Oh! I'm not talking east coast of the USA either......just sell all of our TUBES, so we can buy them back yrs later at ridiculous prices.......just great......anyway.. You're also right about the guitar guys over driving them to a early death.....thanks for your thoughts.....
post #36 of 388/17/10 at 7:38amThis method of pricing permeates the whole consumer industry and if you ask me, it seems to be a way of deterring users to keep their old units and replace broken parts. It suits these dealers much better if you throw out the old one and buy a new one. This is especially so when service costs and replacement costs are making you feel that continual servicing and further parts replacements rivals the cost of simply purchasing a new unit and no longer having to worry about parts replacement or servicing for a while.
If you got a few years out of those pads, in the current climes I'd count myself lucky that I can get those pads for that price and that I can replace them myself. The market is particularly vicious these days about this policy and they push for it. The medical industry is particularly sorrowful and we end up paying sky high insurance premiums to fund this. They ensure that they sell their new equipment by encouraging the decommissioning of 'old' equipment, and guess what? This equipment is to be destroyed and not sold to less privileged territories that would love to have machinery as those decommissioned while in their infancy.

Stocking up replacement pads can present a problem as you get into luxery headphones. The Stax O2 replacement pads cost $120 or more. I still have to buy an extra pair of the mk1 pads as they are no longer in production.
