Listen with it set on 720p of course for best audio quality.

This was recorded at a university, so I'm sure decent equipment was used, but these are not professionals of the caliber you'd find in a recording studio.

Just listened to the album Kun Dong - Violin Voice of the Chinese Classics and it's amazingly good! The recording is top notch and the sense of space around the musicians is superb on speakers and on headphones it's just a rare treat!! I'm sure it's hard to find but if you guys manage to find it....BUY IT!!!!

Fantastic recommendation!

Good luck finding it. It was a vendor sample left at my violin shop.

The only way I'd know to get more information would be to contact Kun Dong, herself, at the University of North Kentucky, where she is a professor of violin.

I kinda like Ikuko Kawai... while listening to it I never heard someone who wanted to be recorded well. It sounded to me as if the recording and her playing were very deliberate...  Some types of music need to be well recorded and clear to sound real. Others however, need to sound like they have been dragged through the dirt! Very raw! I don't think that song would have had the same emotion and drama if it were perfectly recorded. Either way, it's recorded better than anything coldplay ever did... or the muse... or well I could go on for awhile

whereas that "where the sun shines" sounds like poo because the style doesn't match the recording. IMO ofcourse

The style is lyrical and majestic. The sound is wide and dynamic. I'm not seeing a disconnect in the recording I posted at all.

Normally I'm not one to do this, but after reading your comments, I really consider your credibility in judging quality audio to be questionable. Screeching simple double stops with predictable accents and bursts of 'rage' that sound like nails on a chalkboard... That just can't sound good any way you try to be kind in your description.

I actually do like the backup music going on in the Ikuko song linked on page 1, but it seriously carries the song. It's mostly well recorded and clean which clashes terribly with the violin making her sound even worse (if that's possible) than she already is. Her bow technique is sloppy, which is partly due to the excessive double stopping (takes a very good bow and great skill to do the technique she was trying to do while doing double stops). This is why a significant amount of bluegrass fiddle tends to sound screechy as well. I could go on and on, but in the grand scheme, there are thousands of college level players that are significantly better players than she is, lets not even talk about professionals. In the recording I posted, you can hear someone who actually has superb bow technique and very good intonation given the extreme pitch variations, including double movement double stops (not a simple open string like Ikuko) which are quite difficult, something I have a hard time doing, myself.

I can see this going horribly wrong.  :(

If we must insist on commenting on peoples choices, can we at least be nice about it?  Because I feel I have to explain yet again about the rules of this thread.  This is about peoples likes, not dislikes.  What one person thinks is great, another will probably not like for some reason or another.  And if that's the case, let's not turn it into a flame war, ok people?

I just noticed I pretty much liked most of what you posted Pageygeeza, we seem to like similar styles. Recommend me more stuff :)

Gonzales is nice. My input would be Nils Frahm, the wintermusik ep thingy.

Sorry, I thought this was an audiophile forum. Clearly quality matters not. Ignorance is not opinion.

Actually, this thread is for any kind of music.  Whether it was produced in a bedroom, a billion pound state of the art studio or a shed down the bottom of the garden.  Quality of the recording is non-important, just whether the music is worthy of a "Big-Up".

Now again, please keep it civil.
