A question regarding ipod LOD's

Hello people, I have been making ipod LOD's for quite some time now,  but I've never had the chance to know with what apple products they work with. I basically use the pins numbered 2,3,4 for ground,right,left and then I short the pins 11 ad 15 together. What would be the difference without shorting the pins and how can I make an Ipod LOD that would work with all other models. I also noticed that some people use resistors in their LOD, but what does that do in terms of compatibility? I just want to know what LOD works with what apple device, I'm sure you get what I'm trying to say here. Thanks!

3 right 4 Left 11->15 shorted resistor from 11->21 68k resistor :P

So what devices will the LOD work with if I decide not to use a resistor and just short the pins 11 and 15 together? I need to know because I will be selling some LOD's on these forums. Thanks!
