So, I'm thinking with going either 256 CBR or 192 VBR. Which do you think would get me the best space/quality result?

VBR.  Personally the only CBR I'd use is 320.

I've not heard the Nokias recently but if the sound quality is not great you can go with V2, V3 or even V4, for portable use 320 cbr or any cbr is a waste of space. Trust your ears if it sounds good enough it's just enough.

It's pretty easy to just do a few rips from a wav file and see what you think for yourself by playing them back on your PC. You can rip a avariety of file types in a few minutes, retitle them for bit rate and compare through Foobar or something else for fun and info.

What he said.

Nothing will convince you of a particular course of action better than your own ears...
