Cheap Cans for iPod

Thread Starter

I am looking to buy a new pair of headphones under $100. I have been doing a lot of research but cant seem to make the list small enough. I like enough bass but I don't want a headphone that is going to kill the mids and highs. I want a all around good quality headphone, if there is such a thing. I am thinking a closed style would be the best, in order to get some noise cancellation. I saw the Senny PX 200 II ($80) were highly rated and dont close completely around the ears. I guess I am going more for quality than style if it comes down to it. I also see the JVC 700RX are quite popular among the crowd, and the price is unbeatable ($40), but do they go good with an ipod. Also I am not amping anything. I may tend to listen to music/other audio occasionally through the computer while working. I have no plans of listening through a stereo system or anything too serious. Portability is not a huge factor either.

Here is my long list of considerations.

senn 203     31.00
senn 218      35.00
audio technica ath-m10    35.00
jvc rx 700       40.00
shure srh240   45.00
beyerdynamic dt 235 black  55.00
akg k 81 dj     55.00
senn 428   56.00
senn 228    65.00
shure440        95.00

Senny's arent a preference, but it seems like they make good closed cans. Thanks so much for the help.

Closed cans will only go so far for isolation... That being said, You may also want to add the Audio-Technica M50 to your list, though it is more like $110. My vote would be for the Beyerdynamic, as I like the companies typical impactful but not overblown bass... I have not listened to that particular model, but the ones I did listen too had a somewhat similar 'house sound.'

How about a pair of used Sennheiser H280s?

I would also like to add that I am using them mainly for walking around campus and sitting at home with the iPod or computer. I listen to just about anything except country, screaming, metal, pop, punk, emo/punk type shit and popular rap.

senn 280's hmmm. I was looking at them but they are at the top of the budget list. It can be a possibility but if i can get equal quality for less $ it would be good.

My vote goes toward the ATH-M50 as well.

"I like enough bass but I don't want a headphone that is going to kill the mids and highs"

However, I've read these are pretty bassy. When people say things like you do with your experience level, it's not very easy for us to decide just how much bass you actually want.

If you're trying to save money, I would probably point you in the direction of the Sony MDR-V6.

Full list to consider (Close/Semi-Portable)

Audio Technica ATH-M50.

Denon D1001 or Creative Aurvana Live!

Shure 440 or 840.

Sony MDR-V6

ATH-ES7

(Open)

Audio Technica AD700

Grado SR60/SR80

Alessandro MS-1

Honestly I don't know how much bass I want either. I listen to music with bass (electronica, dubstep, hip hop) but at the same time i like bluegrass, classical, etc.

I liked the Sony V6. If you get it, you can get Beyerdynamic pads which are very comfy.

Any word on the jvc ha-rx700???

I couldn't recommend the Sony MDR-V6 highly enough. They sound wonderful out of an iPod and only get better with a dedicated amp. You can get them new for eighty dollars or so and used for even cheaper. They have a wonderful warm and detailed sound, not to met ion the comfort which is top class.

Whats the general scoop on the Beyers?

From what I read, they are pretty comfortable. Also pretty accurate in reproducing sound. I can't say much more, I've only auditioned them, I don't own any. Sorry.

+1 for ATH M50

You might also want to consider the ATH A700. FWIR it performs similar to the M50 but with a more expansive soundstage.
