Will any narrow 3.5 to 3.5 cable work? Even if it doesn't have the screw.

Most will. Has to be pretty narrow mind you. See the above references for a greater explanation of that. Most "iPhone" approved cables should work since they are made with squeezing past a bulky case in mind.

Cheers

Shure makes a coiled, threaded headphone cable... wonder if it would work...

where did you get your velour pads for the q 40s

I got mine here:

They are "special order" so they don't ship immediately, but I had no problems... just a bit of a wait.

I just ordered a new V-Moda 3 Button cable and a set of Beyerdynamic 770 leather pads for them. I want to find out if they are any better than my velour pads when it comes to isolation and/or comfort.

Have you tried the Beyerdynamic black leather gel pads?  EDT 300 GS is P/N.  they seem a great option if you don't want velour.

Guys,

I am using the V-moda grey cloth cable instead of the stocker.  Much improves the portability of moving around.

http://v-moda.com/audio-only-cable/ here's the link to the very nice, very light and very flexible V-moda cable I use on my Q40's.  They have a few colors to choose from and only cost $12.  Well worth it.
