I'm in a bit of a quandary:

The Dilemma:

If you've followed my recent post, I dumped my wonderful stupendous and awesome Mark Lawton MD2000 ( I loved 'em! ) because my ears are too sensitive these days to handle the bass impact after an accident.  Even an HD650's bass is right on the line these days, swaying into the "too much" region.

The Response:

So I purchased a K701 which I like a lot.  It brings Vocal Trance to life, and makes it fun and "headphoney," as in accurately reproduces all the effects you just get lost in, while damping down the pounding bassline that makes Trance fun in a club but not in a headphone!

But comparing it to the HD650, it sounds kinda "cheap" sounding: a little plastic, a little thin.  And it really fizzles in dramatic moments, like when the music stops for impact with a bass drum / cymbal hit.  The 650 gives you impact, depth and slow decay.  pa-POW! SSSSssssss.....  The 701 well, doesn't.  At all.  'pop'... gone.

Don't get me wrong: it has great lower bass reproduction and superior control!  And it's lack of bass impact is what I need for my ears.  But, y'know, the dramatic impact needs to be better, if at all possible.  Also the 650, while not nearly as spacious and clear, sounds smoother and richer and seems to have better quality sound reproduction.

The Solution?

I'm wondering what I can find in a K701 sound signature with that awesome accuracy, precision and soundstage, that sounds a little smoother and higher quality.  ( I didn't like the 650 because it is a bit muted sounding, and muddy on detailed passages to my tastes, and the soundstage isn't nearly as wide as I like.  For example, the 701 picked up many details the 650 totally left out ).

The Source:

My source is a Glow Audio One tube amp which I love, and MP3 players. I cannot upgrade my production source because my entire collection is on MP4 files, and will continue to be as it grows.

The Requirements:

I listen to Vocal Trance mainly when I use headphones: think Ferry Corsten, John O'Callaghan, Cold Blue, iiO, Ocean Lab, Dash Berlin, Armin van Buren, etc.  This type of music has lots of layering, drama, pan effects, effect sounds, strings (electronic) and female vocals and/or harmonies.

What I'm looking for in a headphone, which is all based on Vocal Trance demands, for example:

Sweet, luscious and intimate midrange for female vocals
Clear highs that are not shrill highs
Awesome, spacious soundstage
Excellent detail and reproduction of effects
Thin, weak bass impact, but still deep, accurate bass
Beautiful and realistic female choral and string reproduction

The Budget:

Budget is limited to about $500 or less, because of other commitments.  And I'd have to sell off my other cans ( my HD650 with Cardas cable upgrade is already for sale here, $450 ).  Thanks much, David

I haven't heard the hd800, but have a feeling you are going to have to step up to the high end cans to hear an appreciable upgrade over the701.
I'd love to see what others think...

The hd800 is a higher quality k701. You get everything the k701 has but better and it also has a nice tight bass. It should be exactly what you are looking for.

Agreed. I was in a similar situation as the OP, wanting to keep the K701 sound but improve it. Recently bought the HD800 and my only regret is not getting them sooner.

Bingo!

Previously owning the K701s and direct A-Bs with the HD800s, I have to completely agree with this. The vocals don't sound thin/fake as the K701s can and the bass is actually present.

My one warning about the HD800s, they really deserve a system (Amp, Dac, music source, cables, etc...) to give you their best. But then again, the K701s are just as hard to drive.

if you don't wanna break the bank, you should try auditioning a cd3k ;)

it's not quite closed, more like half-closed, and the SS/tone will astound you.

Wow, thanks for the tips!  I guess I shoulda mentioned budget - I can't afford an HD800!  Though I wish I could!

Also, my source is a weird hybrid.  I have the Glow Audio One as mentioned, an awesome tube headphone (and speaker!) amp.  But my only source these days is a simple MP3 player, for various reasons.  (I have both a Nano and a Zen).

So plunking down my first born for headphones makes little sense, and is otherwise impossible anyway.  Let's try to stay in the under $500 range.  Preferably $300!

For the money (under $1K), then no. I'd stick with the K701s and try and build up your system (amp/dac/source/cables....in that order) around them. They (K70x) do scale quite nicely.

How about a used K-501?  I found them much better than the K-501.  They sound far more natural - almost like a baby K-1000, but without the monster soundstage and the K-1000 has a little more extension at the top and bottom.  The K-501 is a terrific headphone.

the glow one is a OTL tube amp? not the best choice for the k701 and other lower impedance, current loving cans.

My suggestion is a vintage Stax rig.

I assume this is also a nice option to consider. You may try what others are experiencing better with K701, the Burson HA-160 this days. That amp is said to be perfect for K701. Plus you may use an audiophile CD player. That setup maybe better than your present setup.

I think the word of the day is UPGRADING components.

I agree, stick with the K701 as it scales up well. It may be just what you are looking for when you give it a better source and stronger amplifier.

Well, personally, I believe you should just imprrove your system. If you cannot afford HD800, no way are you going to be able to afford a decent enough system to power them. Maybe try a Solid State amp (like the Burson HA-160) and see how you like that. You may like tube amps more, but you won't know until you compare them to each other. I would wait for good interconnects until you find an amp and source you are happy with. I am spending $250 on interconnects because I am currently happy with my (relatively) cheap system. My system cost is roughly $750, sounds crazy to spend $250 on a $750 system, but I am currently happy with it and have heard much better equipment so I know what kind of money I need to spend to get an upgrade that justifies upgrading in the first place (for me, looking at at least $800 for a DAC + even more for an amp). BTW, I am talking about my Beyerdynamic system here.

I'am with you, but the K701's have such awesome price to performance ratio, that it is hard to find something cheap like the K701's with some fine refinment.

I know what you are looking for, but unless you spend about $1000.00 on headphones alone, it can't be attained.

Then there would be other costs.
