Needing advice on which Beyer may be the correct one for me.....

If you wouldn't mind....

I currently own the Koss Porta Pro, loving the sound quality and especially the bass impact for the most part, the only two caveats being that I wish the soundstage was wider/grander and also the fact that these phones are not comfy over ears.

That being said, ideally, the headphones I'm looking for are to be open backed and circumaural over ears.....with detail, clarity and bass impact....I also do not think that I am sensitive to treble.

Also I will be getting the Xonar Essence ST sound card to use as my source and although it has an amp on it I plan to buy a seperate dedicated headphone amp (tube or otherwise) a little later down the line.

So the three Beyerdynamic headphones on my list currently are the DT 770 Pro (250ohm), the DT 990 Pro (250ohm) or the DT 880 Premium.

Currently there is a price difference of £40 between the 3 headphones, the DT 990 being £40 dearer than the rest with the DT 880 being a refurbished model and maybe representing something of a bargain.

In any case the only thing putting me off the DT880 is the fact that I read there is a lack of bass impact but on the other hand I read they are super clear and detailed, basically I'm undecided between the DT880 Premium and the DT990 Pro.....really like the Koss Porta Pro sound that I currently own but I want comfy over ears again....music I listen to is mostly rock with some electronica thrown in....I'd also be watching movies and playing games through these headphones.

So not sure which one to punt for, I'm thinking the DT 880's because I could conceivably profit on them if I didn't like them, but I change my mind daily between the headphones. I'll either love or hate the DT 880's that's one thing I will say. Not that I'm a basshead in particular I love clarity and detail just as much if not more it's just I do notice when the bass impact is lacking.

There are about 2 or 3 more of these threads started in the past month. You might want to try the SEARCH feature. It's really all there.

Dude I have done nothing but search and research on this ever since I started coming on head fi, you think I'm one of these people that posts without searching ? nah. Total opposite, I search first before I post every single time. I mean what would you rather me do not post at all ? You know as well as I do that sometimes you have to post to get an opinion that resonates more specifically to your own personal situation. And you'll also notice I posted in the thread you justs linked me to and if memory serves me correctly I posted in there before I made this thread. And I made this thread because at the time I wasn't getting any answers. And left up to you I still wouldn't have any.

Why the 990 pro but the 880 premium?

If you're willing to drop the cash on the 880, go whole hog and grab yourself a 990/600.  They'll sound decent out of your soundcard, then when you upgrade and hook it all up to a tube amp down the road, you'll be in heaven.

Sorry, just noticed the British Pounds.  That complicates things, doesn't it?

The 990 Pros aren't as bad as people make them out to be.  I'm glad I upgraded to the premium 600s, but I did enjoy the pros as well.  If you're after bass impact, they are probably a better choice than the 880s.

joelpearce: Your post is confusing. You should note that "Premium" does NOT mean 600ohms. The "Premium" Beyers come in 600, 250 and 32ohms

the OP's DT880 premium's are most certainly 250ohms

OP:

I'd say get the DT880's

It has a flatter signature, which means a more prominent mid range than the DT990.
If you're not a basshead, you should find it is adequate.

It certainly has the detail and dynamics you are looking for.

He also says he likes the Koss PortaPro's.

The DT880's certainly have more bass impact than those.

EDIT: I see you have the PortaPro's too. It'd probably be beneficial for you to chime in with a comparison between those and your beyers.

Then maybe you missed my comments:

If buying beyers...ONLY BUY THE 600 ohm VERSIONS. The rest are all poorer imitations. If you want closed, DT770, neutral DT880, neutral with more bass DT990.

Thanks guys....yeah the bass on the Porta Pro's seem perfectly fine to me it is most certainly there especially with basslines and bass guitar strings I like that, doesn't sound half bad for gunshots either. But saying that I haven't got anything great to compare them with, just an old Sennheiser 212Pro which had similar bass to my ears but the Koss sounds better overall and was half the price too which I really couldn't believe much to my delight and surprise...and the only other phone to compare to was my first headphone the Sennheiser HD 215 which to me lacked bass impact by about 30% as compared to the rest of the music the bass wasn't level and that annoyed me over time.

The DT990s are the best headphones I've had to date, mine being the 250ohm version. They seem to benefit from a warm, but not overly so amp. Even the NuForce uDAC has plenty of drive to power them. So they would be o.k. For a time with your card, but even the uDACwould be a large jump in quality of signal and amping.
