LF: Recommendations for a first amp

I've decided to come join the big boys and I've bought my first pair of real (NOT EARBUDS :P) headphones. The Audio Technica ATH-A700's are on their way.

In the meantime, I have also been looking around for a sub $50 headphone amp. Also, I've considered building a CMoy or MINT amplifier with a electrically-inclined friend on mine. Which is better, the CMoy or the MINT? What are estimate prices on the parts for a CMoy and the parts for a MINT?

Could I buy an amp (instead of building one) for 50 dollars or less and get as good or better quality than a CMoy/MINT?

Audio noob here, so all help is welcome. I plan to use these for my iPod, as well as my computer; music, movies, and gaming.

Thanks ahead of time.

Can an admin move this thread to the Portable Headphone Amps forums? I don't think I'm looking to buy yet.

Bump?

AFAIK, the AD700s are among the cans that least require amping. They sound good from almost every source.

IMO you should save your money for some more significant upgrade.

Do you mean AD700's or A700's?

My first amp was a Fiio E5, just to buy an amp. Pretty cool and i would recommend it if you just want to try it out. Then i bought a mini^3 which i dont regret either, because my needs at that time was very portable.

Now im looking for a vintage Marantz amp, one from the 70's. You can find them on ebay for 100$ or so and it should be the best bang for the buck.

I would suggest you buy home amp unless you really need portability!
