Does anyone here own one? I would appreciate it if you would post your opinions and experience with using this specific notebook lock. I plan on using it to lock and secure a Lenovo IdeaPad Y560D-06462KU notebook PC which costs $1,099.99 USD. After installing the NJIT software bundle and Rosetta Stone language packs, the value of the PC jumps significantly beyond $3,500.00 USD.

I tend to frequent public libraries, Starbucks coffee shops, and the NJIT campus in Newark, NJ.

Basically, if you own one, then do you think it was a worthwhile purchase? Do you experience any problems with locking and unlocking the device? Does it firmly attach to the side of the PC without damaging the laptop?

Thank you.

I use one with a Macbook Pro.  I've used it in my dorm room, the library, and a couple other public places.

This lock is apparently not easily broken.  It uses a disc lock instead of the standard pin or barrel key.  Special tools are neede to pick this type of lock.  The build quality is impeccable and feels solid.  Uses high quality cabling and locking mechanisms.  There is really no plastic in the unit except the rubber protector in the front.

I would say the weakest link in using this lock is either the fact that most laptops are plastic, and these types of locks are easily removed by just ripping the lock out.  However, that lowers the value of the stolen good.

I feel safe using this lock, 9/10.

-1 because sometimes you need the wiggle the key to get it to fit right, sometimes.

I would buy it.

Thank you.

I hope to place my order in as soon as I get approved for a private loan from a very good friend of mine.

EDIT:

My friend decided to give me a private loan with the condition of my signing a promissory note to repay him over time.

I will be placing my order for a Hewlett Packard DV6-3050US from B&H Photo & Video this Friday. It has a brushed aluminum case so the Kensington lock will have a metal on metal contact point.

I decided against spending hundreds of dollars more for the Lenovo Ideapad Y560D-06462KU. I would rather have more funds available to purchase more used textbooks as I register for a higher credit load.

These usually work to deter thieves against stealing a laptop as the damaged merchandise is work significantly less to them.  however, it doesn't do any good to someone who is interested in the contents of the laptop as it does nothing there (but you probably already know that).

In dealing with lost keys, instead of trying to pick the lock, we would open the case and release the lock from inside. I don't think thieves commonly pick locks. More likely they'll cut the cable and run, taking the lock off later. Insurance is the best "lock", and you may be covered under a homeowner or renter policy. Locks deter honest people, it is said.

The other thing is to make regular back-ups of your laptop's files.

Good luck with school. My daughter starts her classes tomorrow. Her computer issues were solved with a 1tb USB drive and a UPS.

I have MozyHome Unlimited. I also have an APC UPS too. I still need to buy an external 2 TB USB 3.0 hard drive for local backups. However, my next hardware purchase will be 2 X 4 GB of DDR3 PC-8500 1066 MHz SDRAM for my ASUS N61JV-X2 so that I can run Microsoft Virtual PC when I must take the Operating Systems undergraduate course before I enter my MS IT Administration & Security degree program next year.

Thank you for wishing me good luck. By the way, I study 6 days every week for hours on end because I prefer to over prepare myself as early as possible for success at whatever I am focusing upon.

By the way, I already lost the Kensington Microsaver Micro DS lock at Starbucks. I am hoping that the staff will find it this week and give me a call. In the event that they do not find it, then I placed an order with Office Depot online for another one. It should ship to my home by August 30th, 2010.

I lost it because I was busy doing PC & Network Technician work for a friend's aging HP Pavillion laptop and I was on the phone with ASUS Technical Support because I had no Wi-Fi access due to the fact that I inadvertently turned off the signal through the hardware switch located on the left hand corner of my new laptop.

Having learned this lesson the hard way, I will strive to make a mental note of the items that I bring in my new Ful backpack and ensure that I leave nothing behind where ever I go.
