Being a good patriotic Canadian, Im going to say Bryston for an excellent used power amp.  I bought a 10 year old 3B for $500 around '92 and sold it 15 years later for $400.

They are built like tanks, made to fall of the back of Band vans and still work in the next gig.

This: http://cgi.ebay.com/BRYSTON-4B-ST-PRO-STUDIO-POWER-AMP-INCL-WARRANTY-NICE-/300444641769?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0  would be a Steal at that price, if it is still under warranty (which is 20 years, no questions asked, transferable(I had a 10 year old .5B preamp serviced after owning it for 5 years (bought used), and all they charged to repair it was the cost of a proper bryston box and the return shipping(all told about $35)). You can even call up Bryston with the serial number and they will tell you if it's still under warranty, and how many years are left.

You have to ask the Admin(s) do delete posts I believe..

One site I like to read about speakers at is Audiokarma.  Lots of very knowledgeable folks and it's a nicely run forum.

If I had to pick an amp and speakers to use for a few years, then resell, I'd probably go with a solid state McIntosh amp or integrated.  McIntosh is popular, a widely recognized name and should resell with little trouble.  Bryston (mentioned above) is another solid brand and I'd also consider Conrad-Johnson, Atma-Sphere, and most of the big names.  If you want affordable tubes, an old Dynaco ST70 is great and will resell quickly.

For speakers, I'd also go with the established brands that have a loyal following, like Klipsch, Magnepan, B&W, ProAc, Quad, Martin Logan, Vandersteen, and probably a few other good ones I've forgotten.

Most importantly, though, be sure to buy all of this used.  You should break even or maybe get a little extra if something develops a cult following.

If you can find one, look into a Fisher 500/800C.  Theyre one of the best tube receivers made...they put out about 30WPC, which is plenty enough to drive the speakers listed above.  Even if you find one cheap that needs work, Craig over at NOS Valves will rebuild it for you in better than new shape.  Perfect examples usually see $500 to $1500 on eBay, but you can probably pick up a decent one off of craigslist or at a garage sale for under $200.  According to your music preferences, a push-pull amp sounds like itll suit your needs best, as SET doesnt jive too well with rock music with most amps.  You could also look into the Bob Latino ST120, which is basically a brand new Dynaco ST70 with 60WPC output instead of the usual 35WPC.  There are lots of options.  Like was said above, Audiokarma and Audio Asylum are awesome sites.  Im a member of both, and have learned most of what I know about speaker rigs at those sites.

Well, I thought this was a "best for the money" post at first, and my answer was to take a look at fritspeakers.com because you get so much in theway of high quality drivers and excellent sound for the money.

Now that I see it is a "max resale value" post, I will say anything in the "premium" range of B&W.  The CM series or above.  I went through an extensive search and education session over the last 8 months or so, and B&W seem to hold excellent value.  That said, while I leke the B&W house sound, I like anything with soft dome tweeters a whole lot better.

I'm sure there are others out there also.  I ended up ponying up $50 to Audiogon for access to their blue book.  It lets you see current used sale history, as well as original release date and retail price.  It was worth it to me.  The Brystons seem to hold good value, as the poster above stated.

Have a blast with the project - I've sure had fun!

Note - I just read Uncle Erik's post - I should have just quoted it and said times 2...
