AKG601 Replacement Cable on a Budget

A few years ago the fine folks of this forum helped me acquire my first audiophile worthy sets of cans...now I hope you guys can help me again.

 

I'm looking to recable my AKG 601s (which I am absolutely in love with).  Why? My old cable is busted.

 

AKG will recable them with a stock cable for about $80 + shipping.  Spending another $80+ for no upgrade is a bit of a bummer.  I can buy the stock cable for $12 but the labor and shipping kill you.

 

Any advice?  How hard is a DIY cable replacement? I have no experience and very little time to learn.  For similar $$$ are there third party cables you'd recommend to pair with my 601s? 

 

Is there anyone in the Boston area who does this (no shipping would be fantastic, I'm always a little anxious shipping them)?

Dont know what you could do for that budget.  I did find ZXAC on the net yesterday and their work looks great.

the K601 are fantastic HPs.  if i were you, i would just send them to AKG.  you love them, why screw around with a cable that may change the sonic signature?  sure, you can pay extra for a boutique cable, but your rolling the dice.  the K601 uses enameled stranded copper - no different than any of my AKGs.  if you want to dicker-about and try rolling cables, i would recommend having Drew at Moon-Audio do a detachable, dual entry cable-mod for them.      

 

as someone who has done his fair share of soldering and playing around with cables, i pay extra special attention when soldering to a driver.  i can only recommend a temp controlled soldering station and would not solder to a driver as a first time attempt at soldering.

 

another option is to see if you could sell them for around $80 here and see if you get any takers/DIYers.  this money would off-set the cost for a new pair - probably equal to the price of a new pair.  PM me if you want a US authorized dealer with great prices (and a free t-shirt ).
