Grado Modification

Looking for someone that likes to make Grado headphone modifications - especially with experience in replacing the stock outer canisters. I say experienced because I would not advocate someone just tear up a great set of headphones - they are after all - musical instruments. Ideally, I would like to find someone that has an older set of SR-80 or 125's that are no longer in their primary listening line-up but still good cans.

If there is some interest I will provide an original set of the "Darth Vader" black anodized aluminum SR-325 canisters (which I might add are un-scratched, dinged, or chipped) to replace the plastic stock canisters on a pair of older Grados.

I will give these away free with only two small conditions:  first, I would like to see photos and hear about some of your past Grado mods and second, I want to find out just what difference the new canisters make in the sound qualities of your headphones?

Here are some pics of the canisters, let me know if interested, there is only one set of canisters so whoever convinces me they would do the best jobDSCN0717.JPG with this mod and have the most fun doing so gets the cans.

Good to meet all of you, good listening!

Hi!

I Have a Pair of sr225s that I would love to try some new canisters on.  With any luck it would bump up some of the base impact or bring down some of the highs, being a bit lower resonance than the stock plastic.

I have not modded any Grado cans other than opening my 225s up to see take a look at the guts, and place some blue tac on the back of the drivers.  I am good at messing around with electronics and things in general (am a carpenter by trade) and am absolutely sure I could switch up the canisters in a more than competent manner.

I live in Ottawa, Ontario, and would be more than willing to pay shipping and share all results!

Jeff.

[edit] After looking again at my headphones, I am sure I could replace the cups in such a way as to not wreck the originals. If you sent me the old 325 cups and they did not work out e.g. I was not happy with the sound for what ever reason, I would be perfectly happy to continue the good will and send them on to whoever was next, give someone else a try...:)

jagerj greetings,

You are the first one to reply to my post so the 325 canisters are yours and I will close out this post. I am happy to hear that if you feel the need, you will send these canisters on to someone else! By the way, I changed out my SR-325's by replacing them with plastic SR-225 canisters, so after your mod I would find it most interesting to compare with your results. Please provide me with your mailing address and I will mail the cans to you this week from Tenino, Washington. My direct "E" is ddpeet@scattercreek.com

Regards,

Don
