IEM's Budgets and Hard Decisions...

Poll Results: Which would you buy?

  • 20% (1)
The IE8s. They're easily twice as good as IE7's!
  • 20% (1)
The IE7s. Are you crazy? For that price the IE8's barely tops them and theyre a real upgrade from your old S4's!
  • 20% (1)
The HJE900E's. Sennheiser are inferior all-around phones.
  • 40% (2)
NONE OF THEM! (Please post your alternative :D)

I'm looking for some new IEM's after my S4's kicked the bucket. Got lured in by some fake IE8's, and once the refund processes in a couple weeks I'll have a budget of ~140£, including shipping (I'm not against buying internationally). This has to include shipping and is an ABSOLUTE TOP END limit. Ideally the set I buy will be less than that.

Currently, I'm looking at:

Sennheiser IE8's - Used - £140. Theyre in a secondhand trade in store down my road and around these headfi forums for this price, but after being duped once I'm very wary of buying fakes again. The store do have a returns policy, but to be honest I'm unsure if the price difference is worth it when compared to these:

Sennheiser IE7 - New - £83.99. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-High-Fidelity-Noise-Isolating-Ear-Canal-Phones/dp/B00125UBVA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1281203763&sr=8-1) Apparently these are only a little bit inferior to the IE8s, so at almost half the price this is my current #1 choice.

Panasonic HJE900E - New - £94.99. amazon again, these are based on reccomendations ive seen around these forums.

I listen to a HUGE variety of music (everything except heavy metal) so the phones I'm looking for really need to be good all round phones rather than just good bass or just sparkly highs. Some decent isolation would be nice too.

So, which of these would you go for (please bear my budget in mind, and I am very much skint so any money saved is is important ;D) or if you don't like any of them can you think of any better choices for the price? And have you seen them at a good price anywhere? If anyone who votes on the poll could post reasons too, it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance :D

Im not sure i would want to buy a used ie8 from a trade in store , very risky as there are so many fakes you could get klipsch custom 3 , for £149 new at iheadphones , its worth finding the extra £9 , and they sound much better than ie7

id very much disagree there, i think they are about the closest sounding earphones out there

Appreciate the opinions, I looked at the custom 3 but the cabling issues scared me off (these S4's cables broke after <4 months, and I can't afford to replace these earphones for a VERY long time.)

Agreed on the potential dodgyness of the IE8 though, the only reason theyre in there is the box seemed original and the shop offers a 28 day no quibble returns policy. Still quite low on the list due to the price though, and I definately cant go over 140.

Also, if those who vote on the poll could post reasons too, it'd be much appreciated.

Note that these are the prices for the Market sellers, and not Amazon themselves. However the £83.99 are from Hughes Direct they are listed on Senns website so should be good. Having missed out on the £35 deal from Orange I might just take the plunge at this price the more I read about them and at that price the more I want them!

£35!? You're joking right? When was that? Christ. Talk about a bargain, not sure if I can bear paying the amazon price now o.o'

Was £28 after applying a discount code, quite a big thread on here, was a load of fiasco tho! Only a minority of people got theirs plus a lot of us still have not heard from them, big sham!! Was last week.

I've been in your shoes. I saved up and read and hesitated for a long time!

What I'm going to say is, don't be afraid of used items, especially if they're from a reputable member here and if they have a removable cable, which is the area most susceptible damage from my experience. Even eBay, if you're patient and careful, can be a great place, and PayPal provides pretty good protection from my experience. I would always explicitly as for certain genuine status from seller, in a message, for future use in a PayPal dispute.

Hope you find what you're after (in terms of sound rather than the 3 IEMs above).

Thanks! I do agree with you, but my main hesitation from the IE8s comes from the possibility of fakes combined with the high price tag- even used. Coming from S4's, which I thought sounded amazing, would I really be any worse off with IE7's or HJE900's? As they say, "ignorance is bliss" :P

On another note, I just found IE7's for 63£ new (one off seller who has IE8's and got them as a gift.) I think i'm gonna go for them :D wish me luck!
