HeadRoom BitHeads - Page 2

This is good...at least with current OSs...in the future you will maybe have to rely with some sort of drivers.

It seems that it has a nifty feature. The drivers are built into the soundcard so it can actually upload the drivers to your computer without using any discs or anything. It's essentially just 'plug and play.'

Yes, very nifty. The one drawback is the 16/44 soundquality.

I saw that on the Headroom site; whoever wrote that is probably confused. I'd bet the USB DAC chip just conforms to the USB audio standard, which means any OS with USB support should understand how to talk to it. You could just as well say a USB keyboard has the drivers built in.

Yeah, you don't need a driver disc for it, but only because you don't need special drivers.

Odd, I wonder why they didn't choose to support 24/192...

I would imagine because DMCA issues prevent you from playing SACD or DVD-A on a computer (save in the case of DVD-A on the Audigy 2, since they paid out the butt for a license). This leaves no compelling reason to spend more on a DAC for the Bithead, since most everyone will be playing Redbook or compressed files. That's what I would imagine, without delving into the Bithead threads.

sure, but a lot of people like to upsample... not to say this really improves the sound quality but it has been argued to do so.

From the Bithead Introduction thread, as posted by Tyll:
It is indeed a 16 bit DAC. There is a Philips now that’s a USB 24 bit codec but the software isn’t as plug n’ play, it wasn’t available when Pete did the design anyway.
