Other albums like Opeth's Orchid, Morningrise

I have all of Opeth's albums and pretty much love them all.  However, there's something about the rambling, twin-guitar melodies and atmospheric interludes on their first two albums that I find very enjoyable.  Are there any other albums/bands that are close to the style of these two albums?

I know I am disgressing but has anyone heard the Opeth live at the Royal Albert Hall CD? Is it any better than The Roundhouse Tapes?

If i remember correctly, that live DVD has been officially announced but it has yet to be released.

Oh ... sorry. Saw a couple of ads and stuff and thought it was already out. Think Roadrunner sent me an email or something like that. Thing is I wasn't totally happy with Roundhouse Tapes - I just don't play it very often at all, so am weary about getting another live Opeth CD.

I agree that the raw atmosphere is wonderful on those two albums, and haven't found much like it. Though they sound pretty different, I find Agalloch's "The Mantle", Emperor's "In the Nightside Eclipse", Gorgoroth's "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam", Bathory's "Blood Fire Death", Enslaved's "Below the Lights" and Arcturus' "Aspera Hiems Symfonia" to have quite a raw and dark atmosphere/beauty to them. Perhaps it's the atmosphere you're after? If not, and you're after the actual sound those two albums possess, I'm afraid I can't think of any other albums at the moment...

I hope this helps, even a little.

Well, i have the Lamentation DVD and i think sound quality is pretty good, plus it's interesting to see the band perform the full Damnation album, then a set of their heaviest material; The one hour documentary it's pretty well made too.

I do like Agalloch and I'll check out the others.  It's hard to say what I like so much.  Certainly the juxtaposition of fast and slow works well, and the overall sound is rather raw.  On the other hand I often find myself just enjoying the driving guitar melodies, both musically and just the sound of them.  The songs seem a little less structured - I don't mind that they seem to wander around and take a while to get somewhere.  For heavy albums some of the riffs have sort of lighthearted feel for me.  (To me it doesn't get much better than when it sounds like someone's playing guitar just because the sound it makes is cool.)

I wish there were more albums like Orchid out there!  That's the album that started it all for me on Opeth.  Since then I rushed to buy a bunch of their other albums.  But none of them stand up to Orchid IMHO.

Not really the same but try listening to Black Sabbath: Master of Reality.  I know these are very different albums.  But for some reason for me, there seems to be some of the mood that exists on Orchid.

Definitely love the early Sabbath!  I've heard some Enslaved before and checked them out again - thanks for the rec.  Haven't gotten around to any of the others yet.

Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane is somewhat similar in melody, though it's harder, more focused, edgy and frantic. And cold. Very, very cold...
