The actual headphone jack on those units is is the same thing as the speaker taps, just with a few resistors involved, so theoretically, it should sound identical to running it on the speaker taps. Pretty nifty. Those vintage amps are really a deal for the amount of power.

The vintage receivers will drive the HE-6 headphones without issue.  When the receivers were built in that era, the headphone jacks were connected to the speaker outs, but had just a few resistors in the wire chain.  The headphone jack, was much more of a powerhouse from that era.  Receivers of today, can't perform quite as well with headphones - but, there are some exceptions.  I've used Sansui receivers to drive my orthos - HE-5LE.  The only mistake I ran into was deciding to connect the headphones up to the speaker outputs in the back via speaker taps.  What I experienced was a horrendous amount of noise that I was getting on the HifiMAN headphones.  It sort of acted like a warning for me, as I suspected some issues were approaching with the caps and components on the board.  Had I just stayed with the headphone jack, I would have probably still had that receiver today.  One last thing regarding the vintage receivers - you'll realize that most of them will mute the sound going to the speakers when you plug in the headphones.  This is because they have a separate headphone stage on them.  The vintage receivers required you to manually turn off the outputs to the speakers by de-selecting the speaker buttons.

Thanks guys--I have a couple of those receivers still on line, as I am now rather vintage myself.  My oldest is a 1971 Pioneer SX-990 and my most powerful a Sanui G-7500.

I think he means he recently bought them on Amazon for more but got Amazon to match the price.

Ah ok that makes more sense. Wish I had seen the deal earlier, would have jumped on it.
