Help needid, cant seem to get my DIY LOD to work

Thread Starter

hi guys iv been browsing on this site for months now which got me in to high end headphone and now i own quite a few along with my alo rx with its triple pipe cryo lod and a few other i bought on ebay.

iv made a few attempts at making my own lod which never seem to work once completed and iv followed all the guides on here by connecting the ipod dock pin 2 to ground, pin 3 to right and pin 4 to left and it never works and iv now wasted so many ipod connecters and 3.5mm jacks (viablue) i also tried the neutrik plug and also always made sure that none of the connections are touching each other so i cant figure out where im going wrong.

id be very gratefull for any help or can even pay for someone to make it for me.

you might ask why i dont just buy another, the reason is that i want one made with the wire and plug i have and cant find this combination for sale anywhere as the wire combo im using is pure silver 0.4mm and 0.4mm 18k gold wire twisted together then put through clear heat shrink tubing.

the audio source im using is an ipod touch 3rd gen.

thanks guys

Got a meter? Ohm it out. Not much that could go wrong with these. One or more pins shorted together? The meter will tell you that. Only other thing would be if you needed a resistor. I don't know if the ipod touch you have does or not, but you can search...

The iTouch G3 needs a resistor to work properly.

i once played around with my lod by shorting the left and right pin, it still gave me sound but the left and right channel were mixed together.

but better check for any short, the best way to avoid that is bending each pin outward before soldering.

what exactly do you mean by not working? no sound? distorted sound? etc

x2.

I am really surprised you didn't figure this out by searching.

This isn't new.

AFAIK, Every ipod/iphone since the ipod 5G has required this.

nope.  I think just iPhones and iTouches 3G and later

We should be able to converge on the correct info sooner or later

Pin 3 - Right channel

Pin 4 - Left Channel

Solder Pins 11 and 15 together

Solder a ~68K resister between 11/15 and 21

That should work

hi guys sorry aint replied, couldnt find my post as im new im just getting used to how to use this with an actual account on here.

im shure none of the lod i attempted ever shorted as i was very careful also bending the pins to the side before soldering and also glued them in place to make sure they dont touch before testing them and out of the 5 or 6 i made none ever gave any sound through the headphone and it came out the ipod or my 3gs instead.

i have ordered some 68k resistors off ebay today so should get these early next week so will give it another try when i get those.

dont some ipods actually work with an lod then if the lod dont have a resistor in it?

thanks for the replies guys

thanks this is what il do as soon as the resistors come through,

i saw this in a search before but stupid me thought it was just imods that needid resistors as thats what i was told by the seller on ebay who i bought a couple lod from when i asked him if i needid it to make my own.

i did see in searches that some where made with resistors and also some without but i went with what some who actually makes and sells these told me and i had no reason not to belive him.

also i did not find no posts on making a lod actually pointing out that the g3 lod needs a resistor otherwise i would have used one rather then putting all that money down the drain

thanks i didnt know that

by the way, the resistors i bought are 68R (68ohm) 0.6w 1% metal film resistors.

are these the right ones as all the info i found on here either just says 68k ohm or just 68ohm.

thanks

68k ohm = 68,000 ohms

68R ohm = 68 ohm

68,000 <> 68

I would doubt that it is 68k that they are looking for, but I didn't do the research. If it says use 68K, then yes, you got the wrong resistors. 0.6W seems a bit big, but if it fits physically, then they will be fine.

No, it's not correct. You need 68k. Just 1/8w is fine.

LODs for iPods that have speaker need a resistor to trick the iPods to 'see' them as an accessory and bypass the speaker.

you can even skip the resistor for a cheap hack, just bridge 11 to 15 and solder the ground wire to that. will work, but you will get an accessory warning telling you it wont work :D
