Last check before ordering (Opus) (Gamma 2 now)

I'm going to buy Opus dac to pair up with my k601 (and hopefully soon a Ck2iii). Does this seem right?

  • Ballsie Lite
  • Metronome
  • Opus USB kit
  • LCBPS (for ballsie)
  • 2x9V Power transformers (Or do need 15V?)

BTW what op-amp is preferable in the ballsie, NS or Burr-Brown?

The price lands at 400$ which is a bit pricey for me, is the metronome worth 75$?

One last question, has anyone heard Analog Metrics dac? => http://www.analogmetric.com/goods.php?id=435

Not to take anything away from the Opus, but have you considered AMB's Gamma 2?  If I recall, you could probably build one for around $250 including the case, not including AMB's custom front and rear plates.  Add an external power supply for around $50 if you'd rather not power it from USB, brings you to about $300.  It will take a little more care than the TP modules WRT soldering because there is some SMD, but its not hard if you check out some of the only tutorials.   Are you including the Casing for that price, or do you already have something for that.

You also need to consider odds and sods, like RCA's, IEC connectors, fuse holders, which will add a bit more to your cost.

A full on Gamma2 with AMB's panels and Power supply will only set you back around $350..  and its tiny and complete.. (including Metronome functionality)

I have been considering the gamma 2 earlier but there was something about the Opus..well I don't really know *facepalm*. Any way the gamma 2 seems ideal. Not only do I minimize the shipment fees by buying boards+parts from amb I could also buy the rest of the needed parts (for both projects) from mouser or digikey. Thanks

I'm not sure on what type of enclosure I should use. I'm leaning towards the hifi-2000 cases but I don't know if I should use separate cases or one larger for both dac and amp.

EDIT:

  • Ck2iii
  • y1 full++ & y2
  • sigma 24 & 25

Ordered

Combining devices into one box is clean from a physical perspective, but then you are stuck selling both parts, even if you only want to upgrade one of them..  ie, if you decided to replace the CK2III, you could still keep the Gamma2, if they were separate. The Hifi-2000 cases are cool, but shipping to NA is expensive.  Where are you located?

I ordered the available parts from AMB but Im having some trouble with the parts from mouser.

Does anyone know if there is an alternative component for the following parts:

This might be easier

Yeah I've been thinking about that as well (upgrading and so on) and also the risk of humming and overhearing between channels.

The price did drop compared to the opus config. So I might be able to buy two separate cases now.

280$ for both projects, inc the sigma’s but without casing.

I have no idea how much the shipment would cost, but i do live in Sweden so I’m at least stationed in Europe

581-BQ014D0104J There's a 50V version. Would that work?

505-MKS2.1/63/10

512-MC7815CT (Elfa in sweden has this, should work right? https://www.elfa.se/elfa3~se_sv/default.jsp?item=73-286-86 and a corresponding for the 7915 version)

Just search "7815 regulator" and you could use any that has a TO-220-3 package.

Same but search "7915 regulator".  It would be nice to have both from them by the same manufacturer.

Unfortunately I didn't find anything similar at Mouser.  Try this one from Farnell Sweden.

AMB beat me too it..(curses business meetings)

512-MC7915CT  can be replaced by 863-MC7915CTG

512-MC7815CT  can be replaced by 863-MC7815CTG

Can you save your cart as a project and share it?  I'm planning on ordering the parts I need for a Y2 and CK2III and your list would be very helpful.

Wow thanks, both of you!

I dont know if you should use it, I haven't double checked so there might be a lot of errors. There's no pots or rca-jacks i.e.

I'll PM you the carts for the projects and the bom for ck2iii from jeff at glaswareaudio (hope he wont mind) but you'll have to doublecheck the lists.

(EDIT:I'll send it tomorrow, need to check once more that I have everything i need)

Make sure before you check out with Mouser, Farnell, etc., that you go over your cart and make sure everything is still "in stock." Making a last minute substitution can save lots of time and money.

yes, because mouser has this annoying thing where they dont actually pack your order until they are shipping it; so if you are short one out of stock part and you dont tell them to ship what they have, there is a possibility that another part will become out of stock while they wait for the first one. They should really pack your order and have it sitting there waiting for the missing part, but they dont and the result can be VERY frustrating

congrats.  you will have a really nice bit of kit.  i built a couple of CK2III and a y1 for a friend that has a pair of K601 - it sounds fantastic.  the y2 is a better DAC too.  you should also check out the AMB forum for future questions.

Phew good to hear :) I was a bit worried about how they would perform together.

Here's the BOM btw if anyone wanted it but as I said before please double check. I think the clock was around 3 am when i finished so it's more than possible that there are parts missing/ to many of some.

no problem, its a big problem with large projects such as yours too.

I recommend getting the wimas (I actually prefer Evox/rifa for box films) from elfa anyway, they have a much bigger range and all the values, they have all the wimas, all the evox/rifa and the vishay MKP. prices are better too. I wish I could order from them directly, but they dont ship outside of the EU, so I have to get a friend to help me out.

they also have some awesome relays and switches, I got some really cool looking momentary switches from there (they have all the bulgins, but I got these from Apem, which are heaps cooler IMO), the second one is piezoelectric

also board to board connectors (like molex etc) and multipin power connectors like the neutrik powercon or even better the amphenol TW hybrid DSUB connector range,

these allow you to mix signal, coaxial and chunky-ass large gauge power pins into a really cool umbilical for a 2 box build. i'm using these for a high end dac/amp myself.

in fact for this type of internal and external umbilical or molex type, I dont think there is a larger collection all in the one place anywhere.

their signal resistor range is a bit sparing, except for the power resistors, theve got heaps of them, all of the caddock MP930 and the hard to find Bi Technologies, which come in TO-220, TO-247 and TO-126. excellent stuf. man I wish they would ship here direct.

Oh I've always thought they were more expensive. There's an ELFA-store 10 min away from were I live so I might just swing by

These are the ones that weren't in stock btw:

MC7815CTG15V Reg1

EEU-FC1V221220µF2

270-22K-RC22Kohms2

TPS79333DBVRReg1

270-1K-RC1Kohms1

Farnell has all of them (inc. the transfomer for the ck2iii) except for the metal-film resistors from xicon :/

A bit off topic but I just noticed your QRV-08..wow. How does it sound?
