Those amps are more than 20 years old.
They were made for professionals and rock´n´rollers being long in the business.
The advantages of the amps in these (good) old times were, that even high impedance cans
(good cans in these times had high impedances !)
could be driven with that small equipment because of high internal power supply.
The disadvantages are that they make 20 dB gain and that they are
powered from a E-I core transformer.
So hum an noise are normal by design when low impedance cans are connected !!
Hmm
I have wonderfully sounding Lake People G99/2
it had similar problem with my in-ear SHURE 500, but whwen i used volume attenuator (which was with SHURE 500 as separate piece of interconnection cable) and turned sound little off from there, then all the hum dissapeared... But maybe all those problems arised from faulty SHURE 500 earphones (warranty replaced older 500 model with SHURE 530 and now i don't have any problems with SHURE earphones)
