In headfi, you really have to do things the expensive way. First start low maybe $30-150 and play around with different cans to see what sound signatures you like. Read all the reviews you can find of all the cans you have and learn what the audiophile terms mean to get a handle on which reviewers you agree with and which ones you don't. Even then, don't ignore the reviewers that you can't agree with in personal tastes if you still agree with their descriptions of what the particular cans have and what they are missing. Then go up the ladder by choosing cans that your trusted reviewer likes, see if you like those cans then repeat the process in the beginning, now continuing from the path where you are more knowledgeable about the terms and what your tastes are. The longer you keep on doing this, the closer you can get to your own personal holy grail. As for me, Ive had and heard my share of cans but am very happy with some inexpensive denon d1001s out of a Udac these days :) Sure maybe one day i'll get the itch for an audeze or a new high end senn or whatever but as for now, I can enjoy the music more knowing that most of the well regarded cans under $700 are not to my taste except for a few, which I don't really miss that much when enjoying the lowly d1001s. Guess you could say... I am done??? LOL
If you have lots of money to spare, I would actually suggest getting the all the top cans and the well regarded cheaper ones. Play and Enjoy.... AHHHH I wish I could do this :D
