Ten Albums I Should know for a Two month trip

Hi ,

Haven't posted here in ages :)

I'm heading east to Thialand & Laos quite soon , I'm taking a 8gb player with me and I'm looking for Ten-Tweleve albums worth discovering during my stay .

I'm guessing that i'll be very thirsty for new material .

My taste In general is rock but in that big tag I don't have a very specified taste.

My faovourites band are : Porcupine Tree , Pink Floyd , Beatles which are a bit in the same class but also Bob Dylan & Neil Young (Neili Rules ! )  , and a bit more heavy in the likes of Metallica , Ayreon & Dream Theater .

I also like Agalloch and some of Godspped You Black Emperor .

So I'm looking for you guys to give some recommendation ( If you could, write some descriptions ) that I could explore during the long rides in the trip or chilling in the Islands , feel free to give some recommendation thats completely off the radar but that there is a chance that I will dig .

I also like Opeth's Blackwater , Some Iron Maiden , Machine Head - The Blackening was nice also ( I get along with the growling but I can't say I love it ) and of course orphaned Land - Mabool is one of my top ten :) .

Prog metal like Dream , Seventh Wonder and the early Pain Of Salvation .

Feel Free To Recommend Metal , as long as the growling part isn't dominante I'm all ears .

For non-growly metal, I recommend Therion's most recent (from 2007 I think) studio album - Gothic Kabbalah.  It remains my favourite of the last decade - it's diverse, rich and theatrical (it has been called a rock opera, and I don't necessarily disagree, though the songs stand on their own outside the context of the rest of the album so it likely wouldn't fit the classical definition of an opera), with four versatile singers (2m/2f), and IMO is simply unequaled in songwriting/composition, arrangement, and performance.

richard thompson - action packed: the best of the capitol years

(for the neil and bob fan in you, this is the british guy who nearly keeps up with them in terms of songwriting)

marillion - misplaced childhood

(for the porcupine tree fan in you, take it back a decade or so for an influencial sound...)

I'd check out Riverside and Lunatic Soul if you like Porcupine Tree. Great stuff.

I have two recommendations:

Elbow - Seldom Seen Kid

Oceansize - Effloresce

Both are growers, but if I was going on a long trip and could only take a few albums, my iPod would definitely have these two albums.

acidbasement - i've heard Therion album , it has some great moments ( and it is theatrical as you mentioned ) , I actually got to see them and Darconian live at the same show , they were a lot better , Great Vocals ! :).

TheWuss - I'll get the Action Packed cd you said , sounds promsing , i'll hope he has a unique way of singing like them :) .

Marilon hasn't made a storng impression on me when i've heard one of their album , I'll try to sample them before the flight .

mooures - i loved Second life syndrom by riverside , Out of myself didn't make want to come back for more . i'll check out lunatic soul ( Great name )

Festivus - never heard about them , i'll see which of them is at least listenable from my prespective and take them .

Greetings and salutations itay.

A few that I like and my tastes are very similar to yours.

JJ Cale & Eric Clapton ~ Road to Escondido

JJ Cale ~ To Tulsa and Back

Both albums are just chock full of tasty guitar oriented singer songwriter stuff. It's rock, it's country, it's blues, it's...Well I dont know exactly what it is, I just know I dig the hell out of it.

Joe Bonamassa ~ Live from Nowhere in Particular

I love this record and just about anything Joe does.

Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams ~ Flapjacks From the Sky

from their bio:

Formed in Sleepy Hollow, New York in the late 90's, Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams is one of the best known and loved bands in their home state, singled out as Hudson Valley Magazine's "Band of the Year" for the past 3 years. On stage they create an enchanting atmosphere, using traditional folk instruments, tasty electric guitar and the distinctive singing and songwriting of Joziah Longo. Citing influences as diverse as Hank Williams, Dylan, Bowie, Incredible String Band and early Pink Floyd, Longo describes the band's music as "punk-classical-hillbilly-Floyd", a mental rollercoaster of whimsical, thought-provoking songs. The Circus' live shows are where the real magic comes down, earning them critical acclaim as well as a fiercly loyal following. Their last studio release, "Flapjacks From The Sky" has been hailed as a masterpiece by many and continues to make a buzz internationally as a great americana work of art. Their newest cd, "The Great Unravel" was released in August, 2008

You can listen to Within temptation, or lacuna coil...they are metal...without growls on it.

Candlemass - Nightfall

You need to try something new.  Let's see:

Time Out, Dave Brubeck.  Jazz, with huge crossover appeal.  Someone will probably show up to disagree, but I don't know anyone who doesn't love this album.

Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.  If you want dark and brooding, this is it.  I've seen a lot of metal fans enjoy it.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilco.  Experimentation like Pink Floyd, melodies like the Beatles, and roots in country/folk, like Neil Young and Dylan.  This is another one pretty much everyone loves.

Savane, Ali Farka Toure.  A fusion of delta blues and traditional Malinese music.  Familiar and exotic at the same time.  Not terribly well-known, but everyone who knows Toure seems to love him.

In the Court of the Crimson King, King Crimson.  A classic and a great companion to Pink Floyd and the Beatles.

So post-rock. I have the most fond memories of my travels when accompanied by instrumental music. It just sends you off.

Do Make Say Think (hello again) did that for me. You could check The Other Truths, their latest. Sometimes ''epic'' sometimes ''introspective'' guitarwork and not shy of horns. Even the occasional voices. Take it with you and hope it does you right.

Enjoy the trip man!

Nightwish...some of their old stuff is something that i always take with me on my iPod everytime i travel.

A little while ago I realized that one record I don't leave town without is…

Latin Playboys - Latin Playboys

There's something about the dreamscape production mixed with heavy blues and subtle Latino music that really clicks for me. Oddly enough, I rarely play it at home.
