You're right

Love it especially how he describes himself as a tech-buff, sweet!!

Well he is tech-buff no doubt (and to be fair, many of his points are valid), just don't know much about how to run a business nor why people pay more than they need to (*same story from two sides). Same principle he mentioned applies to almost everything else. Just like some people pay big bucks for super car, though a small family car that cost 5% of the super car's price tag can do just about 90%.of what the buyer need from a car. It is not about how much you should pay for thing, but whether you enjoy what you have paid for.

Well, I don't know whether I have to laugh or to cry

I can't disagree with him too much.  The only point I'd add is that there's some variation in headphones and that some sound better than others.  But the reality is that this stuff is cheap to make and the profits are high.

The funny thing is that some people here scream and rant about amplifiers.  But amps actually have high cost parts inside and significantly more labor.

ClieOS, that's why you never, ever buy a "luxury" or "prestige" car.  A $70,000 car really doesn't cost much more to assemble than a $15,000 car.  There's a bunch of superficial stuff (leather, etc.) and sometimes the interior materials are deliberately cheapened to make a car that costs $10,000 more seem more appealing.  But I only buy economy cars new - they tend to be simple, bulletproof and efficient.  If you want a "nice" car, get an old one.  Those hold value, often appreciate, are dead cheap to keep running, and get much more attention than any $70,000 new car.

Lol loved it!!

Better not introduce this "tech buff" to headphone amps or $1,000 and up iems/cans.

This video was discussed earlier on the full-size subforum.

some people don't go to the full size forum though

i think this guy maybe forgot about stuff like R&D.. the idea for nuclear fission vs the idea for non-stick pans - they're still unmaterialised ideas but one is definitely worth more than the other

I disagree. There are higher end cars that are more fun to drive. Maybe not $10000 more, but I have a friend with an Infiniti G37 S and it is significantly better than my manual Protege. Would I buy it? No. But I can see the value in owning a lower end sports coupe from an "underdog" manufacturer (like the Genesis when it came out).

Duty Calls

EDIT: Picture is not directed at Uncle Erik. It is directed at the video.

He's right about the markup on many IEMs, especially the Dr. Dre (but he doesn't understand why) but his rant appears to be anti-IEM in general. He says the only earphones he owns are $7 and too much at that price.

Plus this isn't about full size headphones, so much.

I had the same type of post about the same exact video a few days ago...

If prices were just determined by materials and production cost, things would be a lot cheaper. There's recouping of research and development, marketing, good ol' profit to consider. Sure there are diminishing returns on investment the higher you go up the price ladder, but eh..that's consumer electronics for ya. Or any product for that matter. And of course, some products are worse culprits than others.

I kinda agree with him when it comes to one way dynamics but he takes it to a ridiculous extreme. Dollar store can be as good because it's up to the listener? Come on. Marketing costs, R&D costs, warranty costs but don't be surprised if the driver in a pair of coppers cost less than the rest of what you get. If they're smart enough to do it and you like them enough, who cares?
