CMOY or other amp for work

Thread Starter

Hi, I am considering either building or buying a cheap amp for my work place if my headphones were needed ampling.  For anyone that has experience with CMOY, what is the highest voltage swing you have gotten and what opamp has been used?  I was thinking about getting an AC adaptor that outputs good amount of DC voltage to the CMOY, and hopefully get a good sounding opamp that can handle it.  Any recommendations?

If you think I can do better than CMOY under $100 for work place, please recommend me some other amps that I can build.  Thanks.

you need to look at your headphone specs and listening conditions: sensitivity and Ohms, required peak SPL

for instance, at work you probably aren't going to "Rock Out" at live event SPL

sensitive IEM are diven beyond 130 dB by the 1 Vrms most portable players manage so added V in a amp is pointless

all day long background music level should be <80 dB SPL average level, 2 Vrms desktop CD player or soundcard would be enough even with HD650 - even with high dynamic peak music

external amp's can extend low frequency response which suffers with too small couping caps in portable players and line out driving low Z IEM/headphones, current buffering/lower output impedance may change frequency response at resonance vs a line output with 100s Ohms series R

the Headwize project pages and articles are a very good starting point http://gilmore2.chem.northwestern.edu/projects/
