In desperate need of new speakers

Hey,

I'm currently using a Logitech PC speaker set Z-3. I heard some hifi speakers a while ago and decided that I need a new set of speakers! :P Anyway, I need help in picking out the best possible set for me. Considering the fact that I live in small student box, I guess I don't really need a subwoofer? I guess I'm aiming for a 2.0 system because of my budget. At the moment, the only thing I think I could use in the setup is my PC as the sound source with my Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty (The one from the original four card line-up, below platinum.). I also got some SPDIF out ports on the front panel and I guess I should use them to output the signal? As I said, I only have the PC so I guess I'm gonna need an amplifier also. Budget would be somewhere around +-500€ but I'm willing to go above it also for something like 100-150€. The speakers should be bookshelf speakers, I think.

I went to a Hi-Fi shop and they recommended me a pair of Q-Acoustics 2020 and a Firestone BigJoe 3 amplifier. What do you think about these? I'm kinda suspicious about that amp since I've never seen an amp that small. That set would cost me 550€. Do you have anything better to recommend?

Unfortunately I know nothing about those speakers and the amp. The 2020 only seem to go down to 64hz and since you won't be getting a sub, I think it would be best for you to look for a pair of bookshelves that can dig deeper. I really don't know what is readily available to you in region, so I'm afraid I don't know what to recommend you here. Maybe look around for other alternative that would fit within your budget and post what you find here.

Well, I live in Finland so I guess about everything that is available in EU is possible for me to get. I really don't have any idea as I don't even know any hifi speaker brands.

Well, here's something I could get. What do you think about two Focal Chorus 705V bookshelf speakers and a Denon AVR-1610 receiver? Is this a good set for 600€?

You can't go wrong with those brands!

Denon is good and I have heard good things about Focal as well. The only thing about the speakers again is that they don't produce a lot of low bass given their frequency response of 65Hz - 28kHz. The Focal 706V would already be better with a FR of 55hz - 28hz but even then I would personally look for something that goes down to at least 50hz if I was going to buy a pair of bookshelf speakers to be used without a sub.

Ultimately what really matters though is whether they sound good to you or not. If you have the ability to go out there and listen to different brand/models it would be ideal.

Well, I ended up buying the Denon receiver AVR-1610 and Dali Concept 2 speakers. I listened to the Focal 705V and I found they sound a bit lacking, so I was greatly disappointed in them. I also listened to a pair of Cerwin Vega VE-5M but I found Dali Concept 2 to be the best sounding of them, so clear highs and pretty good lows for bookshelf speakers. Now I'm gonna gather up some more cash and combine them with a subwoofer and it should be one hell of a setup. Thanks for the answers.

Good stuff. The Dali's go down to 43hz which is good enough for most music. It'll only get better when you get a sub. :)
