I have changed my mind since I posted that, and I was thinking of getting the uDac-2. And the M50 or MS1.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I understand your money predicament. I used to use Shure IEMs exclusively and then went to full size cans. Personally I am not a fan of the Grado sound but it may be the best option with your price. Also look at Equation Audio RP-21. Scale up pretty good with an amp.

As for the DAC, I would recommend the Audinst HUD-MX1 over the uDAC-2. Pretty decent amp built in. The nice thing is that although the built in amp is pretty good, the DAC pairs very well for future amp upgrades. uDAC's DAC just isn't as good.

The reason I am saying uDac2 is because I can get it on Amazon. I think I may get the MS1.

it seems you enjoy the same music i do. be careful because the first headphones you spend more than a few hundred hours with will eventually bias you. i could only afford sr60 when i started out. it lasted me 3 yrs and by then i learned to love the grado sound. from there i've gone to sr225 and hf2. imo, if you stick with grado, the sr225 will be the sweet spot. others i've tried are audio technica, akg, sennheiser, and beyerdynamics. eventually, i stuck with grado and got some deep cup darths. it seems like you already know what you're gonna do now, so just jump to it already!

I think I want the MS1 because from what I have read it is a watered down version of the SR225. But maybe I can get a used one for a good price.

Just a warning, the MS-1i will leak ALOT and does not have very much bass.

Although the quality is known for giving multiple eargasms after each use.

At least for me. ;D

I don't mind the leaking, I will be using them in my room only. But the bass is present, right?

Ortofon O-Ones. You can find em for 150. They have decent soundstage and the only disadvantage I can think of is the slight lack of bass, but that can be good if you want to hear the lyrics. Almost nothing in the $100 range will benefit from an amp.

The MS1s have no soundstage, therefore they are useless for gaming and classical. I suggest getting the AD700 for orchestra and gaming and the M50s for hip-hop and other categories. The MS1s are great for rock.

Ultrasone HFI680 headphones would be your best bet, look for a refurbished pair on Amazon.

The Grado SR80 would be next but Grados don't soundstage very well with small pads.

The RS1 is where things start to open up.

Right now there is no used or refurbished but that would be very close to your price range and these are far better all around cans.

My advice to everyone, including newbies:

You'll enjoy $10 headphones until you hear a $50 pair.  You'll enjoy the $50 pair until you try a $100 pair.  You'll enjoy the $100 until you try the $300.  And so on.

I absolutely loved my $40 Sony IEM for years.  I thought they were the shiznit.  Then, I heard some Beyers.  End of story.

Every headphone has weaknesses, and these weaknesses become less apparent as you go up in price.  Pick a $100 set and love them to death.  The $100 set A will have different weaknesses than set B, but overall they'll probably be just as enjoyable.  That's the beauty of psychoaccoustics.  Your ears and brain will love what you put there if they don't know anything else.   Just don't try a $300 set a week later!!

get the hd555 and then mod it to make it a hd595. very simple mod and it will definetely improve the bass on the 555s

I always liked the HD590 better and felt the 590 was a step backwards.

Used or refurbished the 590 is a fantastic deal these days.
