Maverick D1? Is that good? Or should I just get a Musiland 02?

Gear mentioned in this thread:

the only headphone that I've found sooooo hard to harsh is Beyerdynamic DT250/80 (but for some people like me, this thing is a bit too lifeless and less engaging)

otherwise, yeah they still do harsh, not only Grado/Alessandro.

But I am coming from a pair of Shure SE110's. Bass anemic and harsh on highs. I want a fresh breath of air. The MS1 still sounds tempting though...

If I listen to Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Metallica, what headphones for $100 would be best?

If I listen to Beastie Boys, NWA, and Eminem, what headphones for $100 would be best?

If I listen to Miles Davis and John Coltrane, what headphones for $100 would be best?

If I listen to Nine Inch Nails, Gnarls Barkley, and Gorillaz, what headphones for $100 would be best?

Just answer these questions, then I will decide what I am going to buy.

Thank you!

I don't know. Maybe Grado SR60.

Pick one for each category please. If you suggest the SR60 one more time, a child in Darfur dies.

I am going to get the M50's eventually.

I need to decide MS1 vs AD700 vs HD555.

Isn't the MS1 a Godsend for metal?

From your choice? the answer: Yes it is.

and yeah, one more thing about MS1i, the sound signature is not "harsh", but "in-your-face", not so "in-your-face" like Grado though.

Hmm. I am strongly considering the MS1 now. I think I really want to try out the Grado/Alessandro sound.

I want a pair of comfy headphones with good soundstage.

I want a pair of Grado/Alessandros.

I want a pair of M50's.

What comfy headphones with good soundstage are there? Oh yeah HD555 and AD700! Which one to get?

psst...buy them all.

Well I know that was supposed to be an evil comment, it wasn't. I plan on buying them all.

I want a 'phone with bass. If I can find a better alternative then I will buy that instead. I want something Grado. Maybe something with sound stage...

No I really think you should buy them all and compare them. When I first started out I bought 5 or 6 cans and that gave me a good idea of what I wanted sound wise and what was out there. My initial picks would be M50, MS1, and HD555 or AD700. Then you could do a nice review/comparison. Definitely try out the Grados though there aren't many cans that have their qualities. Not really sure they're right for me but definitely a must try. Btw an MS1 just popped up for $85 in the FS forum.

Let me see. I don't have $300 or a good DAC. So that is not practical. I will buy the MS1 just because it is compared with the SR225i and is $100 less.

As for the M50, I am kinda iffy on it. They are great for the price but is there anything for maybe $150 that is better?

I dunno about the AD700 or HD555. They both seem to be icons of mediocrity.

Gosh, but does it ever seem silly to buy 3 $100 headphones rather than 3 $500 headphone.  Save your money (or buy something used that you can resell for the same amount later) and attend a meet to get a feel for what you personally enjoy, then buy it.  Sub-$100 headphones all have obvious limitations.  To get headphones without such noticeable limitations, you really need to move up to a better headphone (or possibly buy a pair of vintage orthos).  The idea that multiple inexpensive headphones have their own unique character seems a little silly to me, since that character is often just obvious coloration.

There are a limited number of good headphones out there, and you should be aiming for one of those.  How about an HD600, or a Stax Lambda, or an SR-225?  You can get each of those, including amplification, for under $300.

I've heard just about everything, at this point, and I can honestly say that, to my ears, the source is only really important when you have some very good transducers.  I can happily listen to my JH13s directly from an iPhone, but I can hardly consider my AKG K81dj as "good", even out of an electrocompaniet ECD-1 DAC and a Moth Si2a3 SET tube amp.  The first combo costs about $1500, the second about $3000.

I know I've increased your budget.  That happens here.  You've brought $200 more dollars into play with a DAC, though, and if you're looking for the best sound, you're wasting your time with your proposed distribution.  I know many enthusiasts here who have kept their HD600s from a time when they were the most expensive piece of gear they owned to the cheapest, but no one keeps their $200 DACs.  Put your money in a known good transducer, and don't plan on jumping ship until you've had it long enough to understand how it sounds.  That's all I've got for you.

The nearest meet for me is only about an 8 hour drive. Not a possibility yet.

I have enough money to do what you are saying, but I choose not to. I am willing to spend a certain amount, but I have plenty more.

But thanks for the advice!

I like my Maverick quite a bit.  Its strong enough to power just about anything you throw at it, so it will last you a good long time.
