DAC???

I'm building a  new desktop rig, for now i have this setup:

 

iMac - iBasso D4 - ATH-ESW9

 

on order are:

 

Headphones : Beyerdinamic DT 880

Amp: M^3

DAC: ?????????

 

My question is: can the D4 work "good enough"  as a DAC with this setup? Or do i need something more powerful?

 

ATM  i can spend around 300/400$ in the DAC, so any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Depends what you mean with "good enough".

It will certainly work, but there are little question that you will find DACs out there that make an audible improvement over it.

 

I suggest you wait for your M^3 and DT 880 to arrive, then hook it all up and listen. If you then feel you miss out of something look further into alternative DACs.

Seconded. Get the gear. Let it settle in and become used to it. Then when you know what it does well and have an idea of what you'd like to improve (if anything) get a DAC that gives you what you want. It is very difficult to predict how a system will sound when you change a few parts at the same time.
