I currently have a "hotrodded" X-Fi Xtreme Music card in my desktop.  The modding was done by myself EXACTLY as described by cotdt's how-to thread. ( http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/226975/hotrodding-the-x-fi-a-layman-s-guide-no-56k )

I have been into IEM's for a while and am going to purchase a full-size headphone setup in the near future.  What I am wondering is if this source will be sufficient for low-midrange.  I am planning to use the Headroom Micro Amp and use the soundcard for a source.  However, if the Headroom Micro DAC will be significantly better I would be willing to purchase the Micro DAC/AMP pair.

Can anyone give me any input on how "good" a hotrodded x-fi sounds?  I've heard people praise them more than I would ever expect but do not know what else they have listened to.

As for me, I've heard a few midrange DAC's through Monitors, never headphones.  I've listened to my modded X-fi for about 9 months now for through Z-2300's, Denon D1001's, and various IEM's, mostly IE7's.  It sounds great but I can't judge its potential for cans like the HD600 with a much greater ability to resolve details in the music.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks!
