Concerning the sound, I did not say it's better or worse, just that it's different. I still don't know whether I like it or not, but I agree with you: they are too bright now. I could do with a filter in between.

I'm amazed to hear the difference a simple filter can do.

And those who like their SM3 with the filter probably won't like the sound without, but those who complained about the veil or the recessed highs should give it a try. I'm thinking of slaters, music_4321...

Well, no chance for me to try your experiment as I sold my SM3s already; they were shipped 9 days ago, but your experiment sounds quite interesting, to say the least, but not interesting enough to make me purchase a second set of SM3s. The filters are also there to protect the 'insides' of the IEMs from earwax and dirt so they should not be removed, I believe.

Now that I've also sold my SE535s - even when a particular head-fi member tried his best to spoil my sale - I've purchased another top-tier universal IEM I've been wanting to try for some time, just to be 100% sure whether the UM3X is really the one universal IEM for me or not. And no, it's not the TF10.

Won't say which one it is as I've made a decision to practically withdraw from from head-fi and me saying which other IEM I'll be trying in the next couple of days might just generate unsolicited 'opinions'.

So, here's some really exciting news for some: I'll go back to what I did a few months back (for a period of about 6 months), ie either not post at all or post very rarely. I did so then because I didn't like a few things I saw round here. I'm sorry to say that my 'comeback' hasn't exactly been a great experience. There are still some great people around head-fi, yes, but a few I've come in touch with have left a very sour taste, enough for me to withdraw. And unlike someone who recently stated they'd now become just an 'observer' but have not been able to resist the temptation (addiction?) to post again, I'll pretty much stick to my decision.

If I decide to post my latest findings, rest assured I'll do it in a new thread so that fans of X, Y and Z IEMs  don't get too irritated/ threatened/ defensive.

SMH and .  And back to the SM3. When I get home I think I am going to try that mod @ Photofan. I think the treble is decent the way it is, but I am curious how much the sound changes without the filters. I do have the SM2 here with me, and whereas the arms are more sturdier on these earphones, I might try that mod now with the baby brother. I'll let you guys know how it works out if I do.

@Photofan. NOW you do this??

My SM3's were just delivered yesterday (today?) downunder and I read about how to 'adjust' the sound in a manner which seems darn-near-perfect. (roll-eyes).

Oh well... maybe the SM3's and I will cross paths at another time and I'll know how to tune it to my tastes.

Thanks for posting this brilliant 'mod'.

cheers

Music bird - I will not try to guess your choice out loud on the internet, much as I am itching to, and will respect your decision with much, erm, respect. Good avian creature.

For myself, I have news: today I received a pair of Ety HF5s from Amazon.  Bought completely on a whim after reading so much Etymotic love in head-fi recently, my interest had been piqued and I took the plunge. Had previously owned the ER4(P and S) and was curious what seventy quid could get me these days.

I've just been listening to them on an epic 2 hour walk home from work, playing the same favourite playlist of songs I have been grooving to recently with my SM3s.

Result?  I am going to sell my SM3s and stick with the HF5s.  No joke. Ultimately, I can happily sacrifice the 3D expansiveness of the Earsonics for the supreme clarity, natural, solid reproduction of vocals and instruments, brilliant isolation, plug'n'play fit of the triple flanges, and build quality of these Etys, which amazingly (to me at least) are half the price of the ER4P and actually put more of a smile on my face and a spring in my step than the SM3s.

So there you have it - from £300 triple driver to £67 single in one fell swoop.

Therefore, if any of you UK dwellers out there would like to purchase my ex-ear lovers at a bargain bucket price (how does £175 with special recorded delivery grab you?), drop me a pm.  I'll stick them in the For Sale forum tomorrow, but will give anyone reading this thread a head start, cos I love you people like family.

End of message.  Let the shaking of heads begin.

Whaaaaa?

Holy crap, it suddenly started getting really cold here in hell. Wait... was that a flying pig?

I'm not surprised. I enjoy my Eterna and RE-Zero as my universals. They aren't quite as good as many expensive ones I've had in the past but the difference isn't enough to justify a $200 or more increase.

If you enjoy it Benny that that's all the matters. That is after all what the point of this hobby is. It doesn't have to be the newest best model but as long as you enjoy your music who cares about the rest.

he was just talking about getting the new earsonics and then this....

@ Bennnyboy!!!!???? Still waiting on the punchline......................................................................

Wow!! I had the HF5, and while I did think it was excellent, in no way could it ever replace the SM3 for me. Now, the SM2 can replace the SM3 for me and I'm think about selling the latter for that reason, But not the HF5. While you're at it, maybe your should try the Etymotic MC5 too @ Bennyboy. I've been reading that it's close the HF5 with more bass. I think I might pick up a pair of MC5s soon, but I won't be repurchasing the HF5, although I did love its sound signature.

In the end, whatever makes you happy buddy (mate). Enjoy!!

@Eric: What are the differences between the SM2 and SM3? Other than the SM2 being harder to drive if you try to volume match is there much difference to warrant the additional price?

In a nutshell @ rawrster, the SM2 is not so much "in your face" as the SM3. There seems to be more balance between the bass, mids and treble (although the bass still is deep). Mids aren't as forward as with the SM3, but the treble is more forward on the SM2. So there seems to be more distance between the listener and the performers, whereas many times the SM3 makes you feel as if you're actually onstage with the musicians.

Thanks guys.  Really appreciate the kind words, and I have to say I have loved every minute I've spent ranting and raving in this and the old thread (RIP).

Of course, my hasty decision may prove to be both rash and foolish ultimately, but I'm an instinctive chap, always have been, and gut feel informs a lot of my choices in life.  Probably explains why I'm such a mess, buy hey....

Good news is I have now sold my SM3s, to......drum roll please......Mark2410.  A man I'm sure you all know, so at least they'll be in safe hands.  Expect his report back from the Earsonics frontline soon....

Weirdly enough, Shane just pm'd me with a Stereophile review of the HF2/HF5 which I hadn't seen before deciding to buy them, but which pretty much nails my view on them to the mast of the 'Yay!' ship.

I'm sure he won't mind me sharing it with you: http://stereophile.com/headphones/etymotic_research_hf2_amp_hf5_in-ear_headphones/

Check it out.  I wonder if I can get a job writing for that poncy mag now?
