WEE - new product from Woo Audio - Page 3

Thread Starter

You can now pre-order the WEE here.

We are using the best possible output transformers so no upgrade offered so far.

One off custom build is possible since these are all hand built.

I have one question (pardon if stupid one), is it possible by some device do the connection of electrodynamic headphones? This device shows the connection between electrostats by electrodynamic amp in application with this device. Is it possible for electrodynamic headphones with electrostatic amp? When somebody own excellent electrostatic amp, then he can be interested to connect by some auxiliary device electrodynamic headphones.

You can drive headphones from the speaker outputs (with an adapter and potentially some Resistors for loading and power matching). What would be needed would vary depending on a) headphones used (impedance) and b) output power and type of amplifier used.

Not too difficult.

Why not just connect the K1Ks to the speaker outputs, don't use the 4-pin adapter.  Then the ON/OFF switch of this unit works exactly to switch between the Stax and the K1Ks !!

If the front panels are made in bulk you would need nice decals to change the ON/OFF label, but maybe Jack can do that -- special order of a one-off fp.  Jack?

Hey I might get mine that way??

Can one of the taps be 560 instead of 580 (also changes the fp labels) for use with HE60 w/ Stax adapter?

OK, I've ordered the WEE.

I'm going to experiment with the WEE in two different systems.

1) PS Audio PWD/Bridge - Parasound JC-2 - Jadis Defy 7 - WEE - Jades
2) PC HiFace - Exemplar modded Music Hall 25.2 DAC - NAD 326BEE - WEE - Jades

At some point I'd love to also get a set of O2's, but that's going to be fairly far in the future.

Anyone else pre order the WEE?

Wavoman: I have speakers as well that I want to connect to the system.

"Anyone else pre order the WEE?"

Yep. Jack has me down for one.

Here is a comment I posted elsewhere regarding seeing and hearing the WEE at CanFEST yesterday:

The WEE was very good. I gave Jack a check for one. Here's my take on it. The WEE, similar to "orphan drugs" is an orphan audio accessory. I think it is a no brainer for those who have electrostatic headphones, and the financial ability to afford one. It is definitely a no brainer for those who don't want, or can't afford, a dedicated stat amp. This also helps to support and encourage people like Jack to continue to develop these odd ball items which help us in our hobby. Jack is not going to get rich off this product and clearly it is a labor of love with minimal profit. So, order one if you can afford it and enjoy your stats with this great little device. Oh, and how did it sound? Under show conditions....Wonderful! I did not feel there was any disadvantage to it, that I could detect, compared to my KGSS. Am I ready to get rid of my KGSS? Maybe, but I have to spend a little more time with the WEE on my Aragons and compare it to the KGSS in my usual listening environment. I am very reluctant to give up my KGSS but if the WEE is as good as I think it is, after a little more time with it, the KGSS is a goner with no regret. I will not have my WEE for another couple of months so the final disposition will have to wait.

How much do you think the performance of the WEE will scale with the amplifier that's powering it? I'm not interested in the $5,000 tube amps like the BHSE or the WES, but would it be worth driving the WEE with a high-end Ayre or MF integrated?

After trying the prototype WEE on a few amps, I'd say it scales up with better amps (ZDT > Nuforce Icon > Travagans Red, but still have to try the Qinpu A-3).  But even with the ZDT it's still not as good as a dedicated stat amp like the GES, WES, BHSE or even the eXStatA.  It was better than my Stax SRD-7 Pro or SRD-7 Mk2, so that's a plus right there.

Is The WA5+WEE combination comparable to the WES or GES electrostacic ampliflier?

Thanks.

Not really, with the WA5/WEE System you can listen to Dynamic Headphones, whereas the with the GES or WES your dynamic headphones become paperweights.

In all seriousness it's too early to tell. People have only heard the prototype WEE. I will be comparing my GES to the WEE amp combinations that I previously listed. If the WEE in conjunction with one of my amps meets a minimum performance level I will consider selling my GES. I'm in a need to raise money mode, not a need to Improve my sound mode, so for me it's not is the WEE better, it's whether it's good enough.

I really don't think the WEE should be considered competition for the GES or WES, the WEE is an inexpensive way to add the ability to use Electrostatic Headphones when used with a Speaker Amplifier (WA-5 included).

Let's just hope WEE is better than GES with moderate/mid priced power amp, if in that case, WEE is considered a big success.

IMO you're missing the point. If you already have a speaker amp (Most of us do) for a modest sum the WEE allows an entry into the Electrostatic Headphone world. It doesn't have to beat the GES (Although it would be nice if it did), as long as it sounds good. For about 1/3 the money of a GES you're up and running (In the case of my GES the WEE is less than 1/5 the cost).

I suspect that the WEE's performance will vary with the quality of the amp used.

The WA5 is a very different animal (SET) than the other Electrostatic amps out there (EL34 based). I did not try the WA5/WEE to a WES or GES. But I did try it against the SinglePower ES-1 and the results were quite favorable. The WA5 with the 300B tubes is not about being neutral and getting out of the way of the music. It is more about the presentation of a lush midrange that can be very intoxicating. I like the 300B sound, so translating that into my STAX with the WEE gave for me a satisfying result from an amp that I can also push dynamic headphones, speakers, and K1000..

Cheers,
