My newest cans vs. my favorite cans: Edition 8 vs. DT990 - Page 3

Same here - I love the LCD-2, but I still listen to the Edition 8 every night - they are my bedside rig Headphone, and will likely be for a LONG time to come.

Great read, thanks for posting

Hw about T1 vs Ed.8?

I too love the DT990/600. What are the best earpads for it? I've got some pleather ones right now (velour ones are worn out) but they feel kind of cheap.

Leaning towards these: http://www.jmoneyaudio.com/beyerpads.php

Another question for  TheWuss, have you tried EQing the 990s to boost the mids?

i've only tried the beyer leather and velour pads, and prefer the velour.

unless i'm mistaken, the j-money pads are a thing of the past.  not sure they're still made...

re:  equalizing the dt990.

i have tried it in foobar2000.  and i'm not a fan, honestly.  i think it does something to the sound quality.  hard to describe...

i might try a parametric eq at some point.  i've read that it does not induce artifacts into the sound like other equalizers...

id like to bump this in hopes of getting some suggestions, im between the edition 8 and the t5p, both are closed back and intended for portability, ive not heard the t5p and was hoping someone would have more experience than me with it.  Im shopping for the largest portable closed back soundstage available, which seems to be the ed8 or the t5p.

this is a hard one, because i know the t5p to have superior clarity, but the ed8 soundstage may be larger.  Im lost and confused and not sure what to do, i love my dt770s, i enjoy the beyer sound, but none of the dt series soundstages made me happy.  I was hoping the ed8 and the t5p had soundstages much wider, deeper and taller than the dt series

I can only relate my experience to the Ed8 as I haven't heard the T5P.  I own the Ed8 (I have for over a year) and I owned the DT880 for around a year as well, and although the sound stage of the Ed8 is very good for a (smallish) closed headphone and I find it fairly realistic with good separation, there is no way that I would describe it as bigger (wider, deeper) than the DT880s.  The DT880s sound stage is fairly big, at times a little weird, but definitely extensive.  I doubt you will find a closed "portable" with a soundstage that is bigger than the DT880 (and DT990 for that matter), and I suspect that T5P and ED8 will be as good as it gets.  I would go with the Ed8 if you prefer a bass/mid focus (although they are fairly balanced) and I would lean toward the T5P if you want a more mid treble signature. Keep in mind that I have not heard the T5P so my thoughts here aren't validated in that respect.  Also I find that the ED8 sound is quite forward (Gradoish) with plenty of punch/impact which at times gives the impression of a not very vast sound stage.

EDIT:  The Ed8 isn't typical Ultrasone sound and the sound stage of the ED8 is smaller than the Pro900.

I am loving the DT990/600. :D I am just running them out of a receiver, currently, but I have a Meier Opera on its way. I will be a very happy Dan when it gets here. ^_^

yea, lots of conflicting reviews on the soundstage of the edition 8.   Some people say its not as big as the dt series, others say it is a hell of a lot bigger.   The t5p should be on par with the 990, but some people are saying the edition 8 is just a step down in size of the soundstage...which means the stage of the ed8 is a lot bigger than the dt series....

meh

i love my dt770, it has without question the most vast soundstage for portable esque closed backs, and i loved my ultrasone dj1, which had a much more dynamic and deep sense of staging.  If the edition 8 had a soundstage significantly larger stage than the dt 770 and dj1 pro, then id still be happy because its such a comfortable, low profile, easily driven hifi solution

i just fear not being very happy with it knowing its not the biggest soundstage possible in a portable set.  I do not consider the pro 900 portable, they are way too big and heavy for me to consider them portable.  Even the DT 770 and t5p are right at that boarder of comfort of what i could call portable.  the more i look at the t5p the more i lean back towards the edition 8 for its size and comfort.  this is an insanely hard choice, im not sure what to do lol
