shop noise

though we all, I guess, got used to muzak blaring in stores (to set your mood-ring to "spend"), today really pushed me over the edge. far, far worse than the kind of cheese that comes out of disneyland, solvang, or any other such trap. worse in fact than a vintage car burn-out competition!

had to run to fry's for a few odds and ends. they usually play decent music for an electronics store. there's always some noise in the hi-fi demo corner, and a bit of noise from the game console isle, but generally it's satellite radio, sprinkling like a spring rain, not all that annoying.

today they had several screens set up to blast people with starcraft demo videos at the entrance, the music was turned up super loud to compete, which in turn made the TV and car stereo sales people crank up all their demo gear, and finally the gamers had to run a few guitar hero and DDR competitions.

it was like a visit to the preschool playground where they had given every kid a megaphone. don't people who work in that kind of store (which is pretty tightly managed usually) realize that nobody can hear a damn thing that way? yikes!

I gave up on Fry's Electronics a long time ago and I have not set foot in the store for about 3 years now. The only time I even consider shopping there is to get something quickly. Online is so much better plus as you can get exactly what you want and cheaper.

Agreed, I stopped going into Fry's a few years ago. The agony is not worth the savings.

One time, I started turning off the various blaring stereos and other products. I got a few dirty looks from other customers, but I felt it was worth it. I don't know how people can tolerate that level of noise.

Glad there are no Fry's around here, cause that certainly do not sound right!

We have a shop like that here called Applied.  They have their own theme tune blaring continuously all day throughout the store.  Not surprisingly, they have a large staff turnover and I can't stand shopping there at all.

We have a saying; If it's too loud, you're too old.

I will smother you with a lobster.

As a retail salesperson, I have learned to drown out the horrible music that is background shopping music. Thankfully the people in my store are understanding and we change things up every now and then. We've put on authentic Cuban music, light reggae, opera, jazz, bebop and many more decent or at least interesting things to listen to that have a nice snappy tune. Of course, I've had to survive the majority of months by blocking out the background noise with the constant screaming in my head. Recently we added an 80's movie themes CD on running over the store's speakers... How can you not have a little fun when Ghostbusters comes on?

I've survived the Winter '07 Soulja Boy Epidemic and the Summer '09 Michael Jackson Tragedy (not to say I didn't like Michael Jackson, but This Is It playing on every TV and the store speakers playing his greatest hits over and over and over again made my ears bleed. I still can't listen to Michael Jackson even with it being a year later).

just as a PS: two out the three things I bought that day (not having found in stock one other item I went to get) were the wrong ones, that's how frazzled I was from the din. so yes, I guess online is cheaper: because I would have hesitated more to some of that stuff on spec. now I have to face the return trip! ;-(

I had that issue with the Beatles when the remasters/Beatles Rock Band came out.... I still can't listen to them.
